Hello. I have a family member due to fly today CBR/SYD to JFK via HND. HND-JFK is with JL. Return flight (also Classic Reward) is all QF. She is Bronze and Y seating.

The CBR flight leaves at 4pm.

Last night she saw a Dr and is now receiving antibiotics for tonsilitis. This morning she is up and has no temp still.

The question is what options she has for cancellation or changes. We have read: https://help.qantas.com/support/s/article/Cancelling-or-changing-a-Reward-flight-booking

  • Within 24 hours of your Classic Flight Reward booking departing, you can change date and time, or cancel your booking, by calling your local Qantas office. Exception: If the change is requested for an airline that requires ticket reissue for changes to flight number or date of travel, changes are only permitted up to 24 hours before departure of the first flight in your booking.
    I guess the biggest question is whether the change requires a ticket reissue from JL. I would have thought so. If so then she would have to go and wear a mask. I'd be worried if her temp did go up and she tried entering the U.S. though.
Am I correct in assuming JL will require a ticket re-issue? If so even canceling would seem to lose her all the ponts for the complete return journey. Would appreciate any ideas.

Given the no Temperature , she should be fine to enter the US as symptoms generally last 3-4 days if it's caused by a viral infection.
On the flight issue, I would imagine it comes down to what's the timing of the HND-JFK sector.

Unfortunately that is not often the case

Basically there is just over 2hrs to decide whether to cancel or effect a change for the HND-JFK flight.

@PaulyB
I don't know if the flight change needs to be requested by 24hrs prior to a flight or requested and ticket reissued by 24hrs prior to a flight.

@PaulyB

If cancelling:

I would only cancel the sectors that need cancelling to avoid losing points.

I suspect this is currently
CBR-SYD
SYD-HND
HND-JFK

And not cancel the JFK-AU flight

Because it's possible to get a one way SYD-HNL and HNL-JFK with HA in Y at a reasonable price at a slightly later date if that works?
