Using your idea to look for the reward seat first and then book cash fares on the same flight:
Each time i search the Qantas site, even for points plus pay for various dates through the multi city option, a box appears that says itinerary unavailable. Ive tried several different dates, Ive ticked flexible with dates. Ive tried search for classic fares only and general search. Always the MAD-BNE portion causes this message. BNE-LHR RETURN there are options, but nothing using MAD-BNE as a second leg option on an open jaw. Any ideas?

That would be 120,000 points + AUD511.86.

Very roughly speaking, you might be looking at something like AUD2,000 a head in cash fares, meaning that 120,000 points could save you around $1,500. That's not the worst value if you're struggling to use the points otherwise.

I issue might be status level. I'm platinum, so I do see more availability sometimes. That's kinda why I asked if you could see the flights on 8 or 10 Jan 2017.

For points plus pay, I'd do a search for cash fares and then select pay with points later on in the process. Having said that, my quick search just now only gives return flights via LHR with Ibera on the first leg.
