Classic rewards upgrade… not immediately confirmed 🫤

Hi All 👋🏻

I’m wondering if people have advice…

So. I bought a flight (Syd to bne) using cash.
I checked to make sure there were business reward seats avail.
I then requested an upgrade.

In the t&c’s it says that if a classic upgrade reward is available at the time of request, it will be confirmed immediately and points will be deducted.

The upgrade said ‘requested’ … so I waited. Nothing. It was meant to be immediate.

I call up the call centre. I’ve spoken to 5 different people who all say ‘you purchased a commercial ticket - so you can only get a confirmed upgrade if it’s an upgrade from a ticket purchased with points.’

However, the t&c’s don’t say that. They say that the cash ticket can be upgraded.

Has anyone else come across this issue? Currently on hold waiting for a supervisor… 🤯

I think you should get the upgrade. If it is still available, have you try cancelling and resubmitting the request online?

Absolutely should get for any domestic fare if U is available.

However, there are some glitches. One big one is if you request the upgrades prior to the ticket being issued)ie right after booking) that can fail.

Try to cancel online and resubmit.

I have no idea why the agents woukd be giving confusing or conflicting info. Sigh.

I agree with everyone the upgrade should be instant.

I've done it before and it's an instant upgrade provided classic reward seats are available to book outright.

Maybe a glitch like others suggested? I would definitely try cancel request and re-request?

The auto confirm of U for upgrades stopped being 100% auto a few years ago. I've seen it myself first hand and friends also. It's usually auto confirmed unless it isn't. Most staff will just tell you that you have to wait.

Indeed. While not-ticketed is one of the reasons it might not work, there seem to be other factors at play as well,

I've requested many times and not had auto approval but recurved it in the week leading up to the flight (Dom).

Off topic. Just received the bid now email for our flights to JNB next week. We've bitten the bullet and traveling Y but option to upgrade to both Y+ and J keep tempting me (classic reward upgrade).

This has happened to me, luckily I got a knowledgeable agent on the phone who cancelled the request and resubmitted, and hey presto!

Yeah me too. I tried a number of times to do it online. Called VIP and the agent was stumped too. I'd waited for ticketing etc and everything was fine. HBA agent had to do some backend magic to force it through.

With that particular recent case I had, it was on an Amex issued ticket (can you say "travel credit"? :) ), though agent agreed that should not have been a factor. It was just weirdly glitchy.
