Coast to Coast [Economy] Cost Cutting

I pretty much only fly in Y. Unless hubby (who is Plat with VA) decides to upgrade me himself, or I use a whole year's worth of credit card points for a J flight to PER with QF, so I think I'm qualified to comment here.

I do not enjoy flying Y on VA because they are almost exclusively 737s, particularly up the east coast, and I am fat (not "spill over the seat" fat, but "only just fit" fat, which is still uncomfortable in a 737). At least with QF, if you pick your flight carefully, you can get an A330 MEL-SYD. Even PER-MEL the red eye flight is always a 737 on VA, which suggests that one or more of the day MEL-PER flights must be as well (probably, I've never checked this). Putting 200 pax on the red-eye in a 737 may be a good scheduling decision because it puts the plane in MEL for the first morning flight, but it's tantamount to torture as far as I am concerned (hubby has made that mistake once, despite me warning him against it, he thought it would be okay if he was in J. It wasn't.). I only fly JQ if I can't avoid it. My overarching memory of the flights I have taken with JQ is of my knees squished up against the seat in front and I'm only 168cm tall. I've not found leg room to be a major issue on QF or JQ.

(Hubby is often finding his VA MEL-PER and return J flights downgraded from A330 to 737 BTW, but I digress)

So there's that reason not to fly VA, all things being equal. The food I think is less of an issue for me, but perhaps that's because my last fight SYD-MEL on QF, the boxed dinner was so bad I only ate a few morsels of it before giving up. And salt did not help. AND they tried to charge me for wine with their dinner service (I was not aware that anything had changed), but when I looked perplexed he relented and just gave it to me. It was an A330 for reasons above, so the seat was relatively spacious and comfortable, though perhaps a little hard. My last flight with VA was BNE-MEL on a 737 and we had to buy our food from the menu IIRC. Which was fine as at least what you buy is decent quality for what it is. (I do love the Moreish nuts/pretzel packs on VA).

So for me, on balance, I will take the flight where an A330 (Or Embraer) is operated. And yes, I will get pissy if they swap out the aircraft. I always travel with my phone and iPad so IFE for me is take it or leave it stuff. I always get on the plane with an outrageously expensive bottle of diet coke that I've purchased in the terminal because for some reason airlines think DC is the same product as Zero and any DC addict will tell you it is no such thing. So I've already bought a drink, buying a snack seems to be no great stretch, but on QF, I don't even get that option if I don't like the offering. So as I said, the plane itself and the timing of the flight makes the decision for me.

It's interesting-there seems to be a large variance in the standard and quality of hosties. Recent flight in J had them hiding up the front except when they had to serve meals, whereas the retune leg the head hostie was brilliant and actively asked if I'd like another drink etc, make the effort to see that I was content.

Really made a huge difference-the first leg left me wanting to fly Qantas but the efforts of the second retained me.

I then flew Perth VA and returned Qantas to check the difference. Overal i preferred the VA offering. Qantas had these coughpy iPad flight entertainment systems and their lounge was no better than VA.

The tipping point was the beer-Qantas had rubbish and Hieniken which is terrible where as VA had Crownies which I love :)

I wish I had Robyn Ironside's job. 80% of the article was written for her. By us.

Indeed. At least we got referenced... I think.

One quote of mine made it in there, although it might have been worth double-checking that the context was still relevant.

Did the "fee" you charged include J airfares for the interview...or Y?

The article is a little unfair using an 'actual' photo of the VA meal compared to the 'impossible to obtain' media shot from QF.

I have some good 'real life' photos of sweating wilted boxes they could have used.

Yep I agree that's lazy - there are heaps of glossy PR photos of both VA and QF meals and heaps of "real life" actual photos also available online from both QF and VA passengers. Would it be too much to expect some comparison of these photos with properly attributed captions to at least give the appearance of some original research and attempt at fairness?

Very good point !

How to sway an article to suit your narrative

Dairy milk chocolate bar for this morning's in-flight snack.. Don't know how they thought that would be good catering decision...

The headline has been updated to "Virgin meal service changes have divided passengers and left a sour taste in frequent flyers mouths."

They shouldn't use that photo with that headline, because it was not a sour taste at all!

Agree with the quotes above. My comments were also used, but I didn't actually make a complaint about VA's cost cutting, just an observation about what could be. Maybe I should start writing travel articles......

Now there is a unique post. I didn't think anyone would seriously string together the words "good" and "catering" whilst discussing VA! ;)

was this on a coast to coast flight?

Sorry just realised this was a coast to coast specific thread.. It was bne-syd, although a chocolate bar at 8 in the morning isn't very appealing..

I flown VA J 3 times in the last fortnight and each time there was rubbish on the floor. I'm not sure of the implication, but it is not a good look.

I know this is now out of context in this tread, but my previous comment was here, so I'll tack this bit on.

My lastest VA J excursion was very hit and miss. Sat down to a used toothpick on the centre armrest/table and when I asked the young lady to remove it, she looked at me in bewilderment and asked incredulously "what, to the bin?"........

There was no offer of pre-flight drinks and only one meal choice (which was nice enough) and immediately after the meal tray was collected, she disappeared down the back to hide. I had to buzz for a coffee as it was not asked.

It's pretty poor that VA still haven't been able to sufficiently train all cabin supervisors to deliver a good business service. The above is effectively a flight attendant delivering an economy service with different food.

Shame really since VA for have some great people who can deliver a great business service.
