Coles, Woolworths to Give points to those who bring their own shopping bags

2 Points (1¢ worth) per bag for Wollies until the end of the year or 30 flybuys (15¢) per day for Coles until 17th July.

SHOPPERS who come armed with their own bags at the supermarket will now be rewarded for doing so as the plastic bag ban saga continues.

Coles today revealed they will offer Flybuys points to customers who bring their own bags as they continue to battle the transition away from single-use bags.

Customers have been outraged at having to pay for their own bags if they fail to arrive at the checkout with their own bags.

From today through until next Tuesday customers who have BYO bags can swipe their Flybuys card at the checkout and earn 30 Flybuys points once a day.

But rival supermarket Woolworths is also adopting a similar move and is giving customers who bring their own reusable bags with bonus Woolworths Rewards points.

Their offer will be available from Saturday through until the end of the year.

Customers will earn two rewards points for every shopping bags they bring with them instore.

It's ridiculous isn't it.

It's become emotive because it was a foolish thing to have done. It achieves nothing and is not supported by a large number of people. I guarantee you that it will make no difference to the amount of plastic waste I produce at all.

Coles Taigum (BNE) has signs at the registers. Fancy ones printed in B&W out the back office .

Despite this, the checkout operator had a blank look and didn’t know if she was required to do anything to trigger the bonus.

Here’s hoping transactions without a bag purchase go through automatically. 15c worth of FB won’t be worth chasing up. I will of course. It’s a matter of principle. But I’d rather not.

I shopped at both Coles and Woolworths this morning.

I went through a self-service checkout at Woolworths. There were signs about the bonus bag points but not how to activate it. It turned out that the staff member had to scan a special barcode (which he was holding in his hand) and manually enter the number of my own bags I used. The Woolworths receipt doesn't specifically say anything about bonus points but there's a section that always appears with "Points This Shop". That says I was given 14 points for an $11.50 shop. That talllies with 2 bonus points for the one bag I brought along.

In Coles, the check out staff member said something along the lines of "That's all Flybuys - nothing to do with me". There was nothing on my receipt that indicates bonus points but I'll check my account online tomorrow to see if any extra points appear.

I think it may be automatic going by @ksthommo 's post - I presume just shop without scanning a bag ...

So I have a stack of reusable bags to use The bags will probably break after a few uses.I personally think that they should give us the discarded boxes to use to carry our shopping home

Some people are driven by free points, and some by free plastic bags

If nothing else, this whole plastic bag episode shows how difficult behavioural change can be....It is interesting that some states in the past seem to have done it without problem, but doing it in WA and Vic seems to have sent the world into a meltdown....

The supermarkets have removed free bags in NSW too which I believe is the only state not proposing (or already introduced) a government-mandated free plastic bag ban. Living in NSW, I do hear some people expressing the opinion "Well, the government's not forcing them to do it, so it must be a ploy to increase profits by not supplying bags and making the customer pay for it". And, if they can continue to receive free plastic bags, they'll take them...
