Heat was getting to me a bit by this stage, so walked the few minutes to the hotel for a shower and a bit of time off the feet

Time for something to eat and definitely needed something a bit healthy and with a bit of colour

Down to the Congress Avenue Bridge where a colony of a million and a half bats reside and it's a bit of an attraction to see when they swarm out for their nightly feed.

Trust me there were some there, but apparently they were out a bit later than usual, so a bit of a fizzer

Headed up to 6th Ave, not much going on though, was a Monday night after all.
Stumbled across Voodoo Donut, grabbed a couple for the road

Walked back to the hotel, and off to bed fairly quickly

We love the States and it is good to reminisce through TRs like this.Really enjoying it.
But we did love Houston.Though being upgraded to the Presidential suite at our hotel really helped with that.
Plus the factory outlets didn't have such a crowd of Chinese shoppers as the East Coast.

Breakfast included at the hotel, started with a waffle and a coffee.
Texans really do love Texas

Off to the University of Texas, a short 10 minute stroll from the hotel. A few reasons to visit - the football stadium and their trophy rooms; wanted to visit the site of the Charles Whitman shootings, LBJ Presidential Library; and lastly a young bloke that graduated from school a year ago is looking to do a semester in the US, University of Texas is one of his options, so was scoping it out and taking a few photos for him.

Camera was playing up a bit early in the morning, fogging up a bit. Stadium from the hotel

Stores in the road next to the University opened at 9 and it didn't take me long to pick up a Longhorn's cap.
Waited at the lights to cross the road and a picture of the University Entrance sign and as I'm crossing the road a maintenance van stopped directly in front of it, so this is the best I could do.

There was a nod to the role cotton and slavery had in Texas history. Further on in the museum the story was told of how Texas has successfully transformed the way it is seen in history as a Western frontier state, rather then the Southern agriculture state it really was. Success was attained at the Centennial Exposition, buildings were constructed in Art Deco form to purposely distance the state from Southern Architecture. It worked, as the journalists form the East reported about the progressive Western state. The Texans did give themselves away a bit though by naming the newly constructed stadium the Cotton Bowl. Have read a bit more about it since I've been back and it's a fascinating story of a re-writing, or perception changing, of history.

Spent a good couple of hours in the museum ans was taken by the attention to detail. Each different section had different flooring that reflected the era/event; wooden boards for the cotton docks; cow hooves in the floor for the cattle ranch, etc, etc

Early night, strolled downtown and had a sub for dinner, then headed back to the hotel and bed by about 10. Very early pick up to head tot he airport for a 6.00am flight next morning.

25 281 steps, 17.85 km's

Had set my alarms for 3.15am as had a 3.45 shuttle pickup for the 6.00am flight. Went to bed about 10, had a bit of driving to do today, 5 hours was gong to be the best I could get. Until my internal alarm kicked in. 12.20 and I was wide awake, battling hard to nod off again. Things weren't helped when a screech of tyres, then a bang outside the hotel. Couldn't see what happened, as was out of vision, but a few people milling around and of course the voices cutting through the quiet night. Then about 1.45am, cops outside in the car park walking what must have been the driver through the sobriety test. At this point I gave up trying to get back to sleep, 2 and a bit hours it was.

Shuttle was on time and 1 other pick up and as usual was at the airport way earlier than I needed to be. Austin airport didn't have a lot open at this time, did manage to pick up some prickly pear chocolate as gifts for people back home though.

Quite a full flight and I had forgotten to check in until late afternoon so I was one of the last boarding. Managed to score an aisle seat though and was only a 40 minute or so flight to Love Field.

Transfer to the Memphis flight was a bit of a hassle though. Boards were incorrect with gate information and I received 3 different answers from agents I spoke to about which gate I was supposed to be at. Had about 40 minuted between landing and boarding and I played terminal ping pong for 38 minutes of it as I bounced from end to end looking for my gate. Eventually got on the right plane, board said something else, pilot also made an announcement prior to taxiing to assure everyone we were going to Memphis and that if anyone was on the wrong plane to speak to an attendant.

Uneventful flight, approached and landed from the Mississippi side and soon enough had my bags and in my chariot for the next 2 days. Obviously no expense spared.

Soon on the highway and dodging the truckers and into Arkansas and after a little over an hour, Jonesboro and the Best Western. It was only about 11.15 and after last year's hassle in check in, wasn't confident of any rooms being available. However, also was a Wednesday and how busy could Jonesboro be?

After a few minutes on her computer, the receptionist announced only thing we have clean is a suite so you can have that Mr Mugavin.

Watched the training session, caught up with the Director of Football just to confirm I was good to be in the Department the following day 'Of course, you're free to go wherever you want and sit in on any meetings you want'.
They give me great access to the department and have worked it out that it's due to the high esteem they hold the young bloke in.
About half way through the sessions the special teams are done, so made my way to the outer side where i was able to chat with the young fella and the other members of the special teams for the next hour and a half or so. Able to get a few different angles for some photos as well.

Handed over and apologised for the not so great for the diet stuff that I'd brought over for him. He had a bit of a chuckle and told me 'all good, I don't actually do any running anymore'

Back to the hotel ready for an early start the next morning.

15 578 steps, 11km

Up early and breakfast included in the room rate. Tried biscuits and gravy, tough to take early in the morning.
Up a the football department ready for a 7.30 start.

IMG_0005 (2)__1572162180_106.68.185.249.jpg

Previous day speaking to the Director of Football told me that the staff meeting would start at 8.30 and didn't quite catch what the other meeting at 7.30 was. Last year, staff meetings started at 7.30, so just thought slip of the tongue/my hearing and staff meeting good to go at 7.30. Into the meeting room, director of coaching introduces me, head coach at head of the table , as he was last year. Lot of new faces as a lot of coaching changes, 1 fella extends the hand and introduces himself and mentions that his wife is from New Zealand. Close cousins i say and notice he has a bible in front of him. No biggie, we are in the bible belt but don;t recall any coaches having a bible in front of them during meetings. They certainly had them on their desks in their offices. Bit of small talk, offering me chik fil a biscuits and the boxes of donuts they had in the middle of the table. Bit of shock when I mentioned we don't have Chik fil a in oz. Had noticed a few other bibles in front of some of the coaches and the penny was starting to drop. 7.30, gentleman at the opposite end of the table from the head coach announces 'last week we were looking at psalm/extract ..... (can't remember the exact words), lets review what we discussed'. Found myself in a bible study group. Not my thing at all, but for the next hour I said Amen when I had to and showed the respect the group deserved. Not my thing but i am open minded enough to have a listen and a think. To be honest I did open the bible back at the hotel for a bit of a read, lasted about 30 seconds. To finish the session one of the ladies wanted to finish with a prayer and asked everyone to link hands. Fella I was seated next to, we were on the outside of the main table, fisted up and said that he had sick kids at home and didn't want to transfer any germs. Fine with me, except that the lady saying the prayer was praying for just about every individual in the town and my arm felt like it was falling off.

A t 8.30 changover of some of the people in the bible study and a few of the coaches came in that were not involved. Talk about injuries, I was a bit gob smacked when they discussed that they should look at keeping players with ACL injuries out for a year rather than the 4 - 6 months that they currently do as they found that 100% of their players get a recurrence of the injury. For such an advanced program they really do some things that are a bit behind.

Talk came to their roster. NCAA rules allow 85 scholarships and a maximum of 25 new scholarships per year. For the first time in a long time, A State is in the position of being able to fill their roster next season. They finally got around to the punter position. The young fella's last year, Head coach 'We desperately need a punter for next year. Noel, you got anyone for us?' Was said in jest, but the response when he then said to the room that 'Noel's responsible for the young fella' took me aback a bit and made me realise the impact the young bloke has had at the college. When the words came out, everyone at the table was a whooping and a hollerin at the the belief I had something to do with the young blokes ability to kick a football. Had to tell them that the only person responsible for the young fella is the young fella.

Anyway told them I did have someone, would have to wait a few years though. I've been working with a 14 year old kid at school who's got a leg on him and took some vision and took it over. They were quite impressed when I told them how far he was kicking and his hang times. In jest again 'can we put exclusive rights on him?'

Sat in on a couple of positional meetings before I went for a wander around the new facility.
