I'm flying Virgin this weekend OOL-ADL with 4 other family members on Choice fares so we all get a 23kg baggage allowance each. Would we able to combine those allowance into 2 larger bags up to the maximum 32kg? We'd still be way under the weight limit and I have done this previously flying internationally with Emirates and Qantas.

Do you have any Velocity status?

Better not otherwise there may be an overweight baggage charge:

But hope you're pooling Velocity points and status credits from your family (you can almost reach Silver just from the flight this weekend alone)... And welcome to AFF!

Short answer is no. They won’t pool the weight allowances like JQ do. Any bags over 23kg will incur the excess baggage fee, even if your travelling companions aren’t checking a bag or haven’t used their whole weight allowance. Some agents might use their discretion, but I found this out the hard way a couple of years back before I had status by an agent who was pretty keen to enforce the rules.

Ah that sucks, especially as I'll be hitting silver after this trip :( but thanks for letting me know - it's going to be fun wrangling extra bags and five adults into a rental car hahahah

Also makes you question why virgin doesn't have a weight based system more like Jetstar's for purchasing a baggage allowance.

Stating the totally bog obvious, why don't the other family members check some of it?

They are all entitled to checked baggage. And will all wait around the carosel for you to collect yours.

Honestly ...........................

Personally much prefer the VA system.

Have you thought about packable/collapsible duffel bags. Decant for check in then combine again.

I do that myself. When I was in quarantine last year I needed an extra bag to take home all the excess packets of chips, popcorn, poppers, caramello koalas, etc that I just couldn't finish o_O ;) So while there I looked on Amazon and got this one: duffel bag - price has gone up though - when I bought it price was only $33.99. Folds up into a nice zipped up rectangley square thingo. Was able to take home all my uneaten snacks - waste not, want not and all that. :) Once you hit silver it will be your best friend coz you'll be allowed to have 2 x suitcases.

Agree. I have had to redistribute at checkin when travelling in a family group even with me as WP
