Received Hilton Gold earlier this year courtesy of Macquarie Hilton CC. Have not spent $10k on the card as yet, let alone the $40k to get Diamond and saw yesterday that I was bumped to Diamond. Checked via online chat and it is valid until 31 March 2017, so not the next year and then until 31 March the following year (2018), which I understand is the case if you 'earn' it. FWIW have never stayed at Hilton - may now. Anyone else have this experience? Have some ideas on how it may have come about but not sure.

Sounds like you got very lucky. I recently passed 40K spend to receive Diamond status for an upcoming trip. Obviously, I would have preferred to receive free Diamond status and completed the spend on another card!

They do, from time to time, have challenges which give diamond up-front and last for 6 months and 6 months only. It might be one of those you inadvertently received!

Interesting! I was comped to diamond as well, on a Macquarie card. Again, probably only $15k spend so far. About 8 nights stay, so neither of those qualify me for diamond.

I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, so have booked a few more Hilton stays now! Hope they don't take it away again!

I am not sure if I have been comped or not

I have done 11 stays and 34 nights and accumulated 94k base points which I don't think is enough for Diamond?

I am also Macquarie Visa card holder
