I flew from SYD to ADL last weekend, reaching 980 SC's and 15 sectors in the process. A couple of days later, I was (very) pleasantly surprised to find that I had been upgraded to Platinum "in appreciation of your loyalty and in recognition of being so close to achieving a Status upgrade". As my year actually ends in April, and I have additional flights booked before then (hence would have qualified as WP anyway), I'm chuffed as these will now count towards re-qualifying instead :D

Nice one, Virgin - much appreciated. And to show that karma works sometimes, I've been told that I'm going to be flying a lot more this year for work too, and Platinum will mean I'll try to influence my bookings to be on Virgin wherever possible....

Can't complain about that set of circumstances :D. Congratulations. Also, only 800 SC's needed for re-qual, so it's even easier with your expanded travel.

Congratulations! That's a very nice way to start the year.

Has anybody heard of this happening for Silver members moving up to Gold?

I was comped to both Gold (from Silver) and Platinum (from Gold) with 15-20 SCs to go. It probably helped that in both cases I already had travel booked that would've taken me to that level a few weeks later anyway.

I dropped to Silver a couple of months back and have been floating at around 480 SCs for a month or so (old SCs are expiring as new ones come through) and receive regular emails saying all I need to do is take a flexi to Canberra to move to Gold but that's it.

I'm flying 40 SCs tomorrow so I'm not fussed.

Perhaps it's something VFF does for first-time qualifiers?

That said, obviously it's not written policy so who knows whether it's consistent.

It sounds like that's the key to the chances of a comp status increase..... and with the SC's counting towards re-qualification instead, I guess they're hoping that the warm fuzzy feeling that the comp has given you (plus a earlier taste of the benefits of the higher status) will encourage more loyalty. As I said in the original post, it's going to work that way for me......

It happened to me when I move to Gold, I was 10 short with more travel booked.

To get to Plat which happens today (yeah!) I was on 900 for a while, then got to 960 with a lot more travel booked, then started dropping back, but a flexi overseas pushed me over convincingly. So no comping for me, even though I phoned up to say I had actually flown enough overseas to make it but they had not been credited yet. They told me I had to wait.

So no idea if there is an automatic process or it is luck.
