Completing form 1359 for international arrival and departure history

Hi everyone,

I appreciate there's already a thread to fill in the form on obtaining movement records in and out of Australia here however this is now locked for posting replies.

My question is, how wide can the date range of movements be? If I was to put here, say 1970 to 2015 will they process this request?


I ask because I am doing this request on behalf of my dad who has been to Australia several times but has no well maintained record.

If anyone has completed this form recently and has tips how to fill it in that would be appreciated.

I requested from 1982 to 2017 and not a problem so you should be fine

Welcome to AFF. I think they would process that, but if not, I also think that they will report back to you and you may be able to challenge that decision.

I am no expert, but the form itself (Page 1 under "Who should complete this request") says that it is only for passenger movements after 1981 and for any records prior to that you would need to contact the National Australian Archives at www.naa.gov.au. This would normally mean that Home Affairs no longer have access to those older records on their systems.

So I would assume that you will have to do your request in two steps.

Hi Spongebob, can you please tell me how to go about accessing these records online? I had a look at the NAA website and on information to do with immigration, and it appeared that I would need to fill in an application form and wait for a call/email back.

Didn’t realise there’s a clear process for AU arrs/deps. Would I have to file a separate form for each passport number I’ve held, or would everything be sent as long as they match the name/DOB/nationality?

P.S. Noticed that they asked for date of first AU arrival for non-citizens. Does it have to be exact?

I'd contest that 'most NAA records' can be accessed on line. Very few, in fact by number. A catalogue, sure but not the records themselves.

I went down this journey a few years ago. The results captured my foreign passports and then the Australian passports when I became a citizen. Sort of interesting. I seem to remember it also noted the flight numbers as well.

Just in and out of Oz. Interesting thing with longer term history is how the same flight numbers have been used for completely different destinations over the years!

NAA say they only have arrivals records upto 1972. So there is a bit of a gap.

I should have also noted they are flight numbers only, they don't even include third country. I had to use other travel/business records to work out whether many of the flights were trips to Asia or to Europe (for example).
