Just a general observation.

For as long as I can remember on Q Flights after 4pm the complimentary beer and wine service has always come back for a second run during the tray collection.

On the last 5 flights in two weeks i've noticed that the additional offer has ceased. I requested today and was told 'sorry we don't have any available'.

I'm not sure if I've picked very thirsty flights or if this is a new budget saver for Qantas?

I should add that I'm a Plat flyer and never sit to far back from the beginning of economy so I'm not missing the second offers.

Anyone else noticed this?

I would have said it was hit and miss, and generally only done to the front of cabin.
More likely on the 767 rather than the 737s.

But if you're driving two of those bottles is probably on the edge.

On an 1100 flight BNE/PER on a B767 when they announced they were serving lunch they said that beer & wine was complimentary (no mention of spirits) for whY class pax.

If you're driving one bottle is enough to put you on the edge on a 2 or 3 hour flight. They are like 4 standard drinks, that's why I always have a beer - 1.2/1.3 SD

Hugh? The 187ml bottles are not 4 standard drinks, more like 1-1.5 standard drinks. A full sized bottle, (750mm) is about 6-7.

I used one for cooking the other night, luckily still have the bottle. It’s 2.0 standard drinks at 13.5% alcohol.

Ok to de-exaggerate. 2 hour flight, a drink in the lounge = one wine pushes one over the edge for driving.

Agree. 4 bottles is a 750ml bottle.

Hopefully this was a one off and was simply a 'thirsty' flight.

That is why I always ask for two bottles straight away if I don't have to drive (or go into an important meeting) at my destination. The worse that can happen is that you got a dragon who gives you a 2 minute sermon as to how that is not compliant with RSA rules and then comes back two minutes later to give you your second bottle. In the best case, you simply get two bottles straight away

I do this also because then you tend to get two bottles of the same wine while otherwise you sometimes end up with either no second wine at all or a different type. And nothing worse than pouring your Cabernet into the used Shiraz glass

The mathematics that understates the number of standard drinks. If a 750mm bottle is 6 standard drinks, then that is 1.5 for a 187ml bottle, which disproves the 1-1.5 standard drink argument!

In any case, the 13.5%/14% wines would be closer to 8 standard drinks for a 750 ml bottle (or 2 for a 187 ml bottle).

It will all depend on the alcohol concentration which can vary a lot as you say re the mathematics:

Moscato 187ml soft pack, 6.6% alc vol, 1.0 standard drink
Sav Blanc 187ml soft pack, 12.5% alc vol, 1.9 standard drinks

I think some overlook such a variance at times!

But understating it is so much more convenient for both the liquor industry and the boozehead driver!

As long as you don't end up in a RBT check, it's all good!

How much volume in a 750mm bottle:D

Does the actual flying itself magnify the symptons of alcohol consumption? Ive heard people say before one drink on the ground is like two in the air but not sure what they attribute that do.

I vaguely recall having read somewhere that this is an urban legend... I think it was an in-flight magazine or on Epiqure or somewhere like that so the article itself might have been written with certain interests in mind ;)

My personal experience is that it feels like going to your head much quicker but when you're back on the ground, you are equally suddenly sober again- especially if you have to face a grumpy immigration agent!

Its very much not a urban legend and is fact:

Human Factors-Section 4

Because of reduced pressure at high altitudes and the reduced ability of the hemoglobin to absorb oxygen, the effect of alcohol in the blood, during flight at high altitudes, is much more pronounced than at sea level. The effects of one drink are magnified 2 to 3 times over the effects the same drink would have at sea level.

They always crack me up. I used to live a hop step and jump from a favoured RBT location, which I would only reach after having driven all the way home, and then turn off just before it (which made the police think I was evading them, but hey, thet's where my driveway was)
