Flying Sydney to Munich via Hong kong,

first leg is on Qantas (syd-hkg) on a separate ticket. Arriving at Hong Kong at 5:20pm

second leg is on Etihad (hkg-auh-mun) also on a separate ticket. Departing Hong Kong at 6:55pm

is 1hr 35 sufficient time to transit between the two flights?

Also can I check my bags (and get all boarding passes) all the way to munich from sydney? So saves me checking again in Hong kong?

You won't be able to through check bags. Therefore the connection time is definitely too risky for separate tickets.

Definitely doable, but certainly risky if QF is late/ things go a bit against you.

HKG can also be a long walk to immigration, which can have longish (up to 20min) queues and baggage isn't quite as efficient as say SIN, plus the say 15min differential between first bag and last bag.

3hrs would be my absolute minimum for separate tickets

You can catch a ferry to Macau or China without going through immigration so I think that it may be possible to get Etihad to get your bags and check it for you, just like the ferry companies. There are airline desk just before you go through immigration after disembarking but can't remember if Etihad is there. Best to check with Etihad. The cut off time for checking in for ferries is 60 minutes.

Connection time is a little tight but doable.

No need to go through immigration to check in bags again. Go to transfer counter with boarding pass and luggage tag receipt and luggage will be transferred to your flight.

Your only concern would be on time arrival for inbound flight.

I'd agree with JohnK here, HK airport is pretty efficient for these kinds of things, and provided QF get you in on time, the connection time would be sufficient. However, you are therefore putting your faith in QF running to schedule.

Per -HK - JFK - CX only have 1hr 35 between arrival and departure in HK.

I know I have answered in this thread but would you risk a 1h 25m unprotected connection in HKG? It would be SQ872 connecting to QF128. I should be able to check luggage through BKK-SIN-HKG-SYD and if I don't then the transfer desk can transfer the luggage when I collect boarding pass.

I have checked FlightAware for both flights the past 10 days and SQ872 has only been late twice by a few minutes and QF128 leaves late everyday by 15+ minutes.

I can leave the night before from BKK but would have another overnight transit in SIN that I don't need.

It's tight for separate tickets with no protection, but still doable at HKG provided the inbound isn't too late. Are you guaranteed the transfer desk will transfer the bags in the event they aren't through checked?

While the QF128 shows are being 15+ minutes late, it doesn't mean the flight was still open for boarding. The flight could have been closed.

They have done it for me every other time.

I am not sure it is worth the risk unless someone can convince me otherwise.

If bags are through checked from BKK I'd say you have a comfort window of about 40 minutes (ie your inbound could be 40 mins late).

If you need to arrange bag transfer you'd need your flights to be bang on time.

Not that it alters the equation, I say the connection would be somewhat risky, but SQ do through-check bags on separate tickets. So should not be a problem, even at BKK. I would only risk the connection if the QF ticket had last minute flexibility and I had an affordable Plan B.

Think I can cancel a Qantas award flight at last minute if not already checked in? But then I'd have to buy a last minute flight or look for last minute award availability.

Probably best to stick to the trusted ~3h unprotected connection UL to QF.
