Connecting with QF in HKG from China ... a bit dicey? Advice?

I hope you are HLO because there is no chance that any checked luagguage would make a one-hour connection in HKG in my experience. Even on two-hour connections my checked luaggage never makes it through HKG, so now I am also leaving 3+ hours for connections there if possible.

Sadly, HLO is not a possibility for this trip so I'm going to have chance it and hope!

Hand luggage only impossible with golf clubs.

Agree about short connections in HKG. Luggage has not made it a few times in the past. I generally use transfer desk in HKG to get onward boarding pass and transfer luggage although this time hoping to have enough time to go landside and get back the departure tax as I will only be in transit both ways.

This is very unusual! What combination of airlines? OW is excellent at HKG - I transit half a dozen times a year on anything from MCT upwards. Only once back in 2013 did my bag fail to make it. My friend has a 25 minute connection MEL-HKG-CAN two months ago and the bag made it.

Ah that's heartening. It is a strange combo. For some reason when booking through QF site the outbound goes BNE-SYD-PVG-XIY but inbound is the much more manageable XIY-HKG-BNE. I suppose it's because the outbound BNE-HKG flight doesn't arrive early enough to make the the once daily KA departure.

On board... didn't know they serve Taittinger! :)

yes - KA has Taittinger.

MCT at HKG is 60 mins, 50 mins CX-CX. in reality many flights are under this because of ATC delays out of China. If you're running late (anywhere to about 25 mins before departure of the next flight) CX will collect you at the inbound gate and walk you to the next aircraft.

So... as expected. ATC delayed landing though was met at gate by CX agent with 30 mins to spare. Cleared security pronto but on the bus she received a call from QF gate agent to say that they wouldn't take me because my baggage would be delayed... urgh.

Currently being rebooked onto Cx101 and then QF528. Here's hoping bags follow... I'll miss the PJs ...

How odd! Bags can travel on a separate plane in the case of involuntary passenger delay. Anyway - enjoy CX. It'll be their supper service. But they don't muck around... should be all done and dusted about an hour into the flight.

My experience with CX101 is they are just wrapping up 2 hours into the flight, 2.5 hours if you're unlucky. There's been times where the lights have gone out in Y before J....

I even had the CX agent phone back the QF gate staff to say I was happy to travel without my bag to no avail.

Still happy to check out the Pier Business and can't wait til I tick over to WP and can sample the Pier First. The business iteration was impressive.

Just waiting for the flight with an espresso martini at the QF lounge ...

This has happened twice with inbound CX, outbound BA. Maybe it is a particular issue with BA, but as this has not happened to me at any other major hub airport (even in LHR my luaggage regularly makes a 1.5-hour connection), I now have decided to make longer connections in HKG. By the way, I love connecting in HKG because of the great airport, I just now leave more time between flights.

Yes, maybe I got a bit carried away. The meal service probably doesn't get underway proper until about an hour after takeoff - then another hour for them to serve it.
