Continuation of status

Is there a value to have continuous status eg gold or platinum?
Having had platinum for a few years I am going to lose it end of next travel year but more than likely regain the following year
Wondering is it of value to do a status run to maintain?
I will have 700 odd credits but not the 1200

500 SC, or 250 with a DSC, is a big $ commitment. For me that's ADL-xSYD-AKL return in J for ~$2k with a DSC. Personal choice.

My concern would be that they comped me platinum, when they don't do that very often for the same person, meaning they may not comp me down the track when I may actually want it
Up to you how you value access to 1st lounge for international, business lounge for domestic, point earn multiplier and OWE benefits on the network, I guess.

$2000 gets me 250 ?

$2000 would get you 480SC for the route above with a DSC. Not many more $ will gross 640SC with a DSC but that would be overshooting and we don't like that. I retained P1 with 3610 and I can't believe I got 10 more than I should have.

I do tend to make the bookings work with the anniversary date

@kitkatff it is nice those 1st class lounges I have to say. I do travel to LA and London which do have nice lounges
Check in is usual quicker than the others

I feel the only annoyance is you will have to fly more to qualify again as it may be 1200 to re-qualify, but it's 1400 to qualify from gold

Yes that would be quite annoying.
The 1400 original did come through DSC but the 1200 I can usually manage

Seeing that you've been WP for a few years, you could punt on being comped. What has been your annual SC average for the last three years?

From what I have read they just dont seem to be comping anymore
If it is an an easy/quick status run....probable better to do that
I do ask for upgrades and have been quite successful in my requests , so wondering if I broke my platinum run would I go to 'back of the queue" when I got back
Due to a few reasons we will probable only fly a few more years...kinda would like the perks

There is no inherent value in maintaining status - ie if you drop for a year or two this does not register on the Qantas radar. The action of actively spending to maintain a level is a complicated choice, but IMHO almost never valid if you take away brag value. The toil of amassing SC for LTG is a real thing. Year to year is about either feel-good stuff or, extremely rarely, a real value choice as you will benefit.

But that latter thing is almost never real. The benefits simply are far less than the actual cost. We simply have to get real. The difference between me flying as a P1 or without status is perhaps infrequently having someone in the crew saying hello. Is that worth your dollars??

When you are 500 credits short, chasing status for status sake can be time consuming and an expensive exercise even if you do hook into a DSC promotion. It really comes down to your own personal travel patterns as to whether you would get value from maintaining Platinum.

If you often fly internationally and are based in Melbourne or Sydney where you can regularly take advantage of First Class lounges then you are getting more value from being Platinum than someone based in Brisbane so that may be a consideration.

Personally the greatest value of being platinum to me is being higher in the pecking order for upgrade requests and the ability to request inventory to be opened up on Qantas for reward booking, but again there is little value in having this benefit if you are not intending to use it.

All loyalty programmes suck us in to wanting status (they are a marketing tool after all) but chasing status for the sake of it is a fool's game unless you personally derive value from the benefits bestowed by that status.

IMO it depends on a few things....

If you have trips coming up where status can provide benefits

If you're going to fly F forget about the status

If you got a truckload of points that need burning..... status can provide benefits

For QF upgrades .... status is critical. I'm sure you know that. Does that make the decision any clearer?

Yes I think it does. The best part about writing a thread is people put up pros and cons.
Advice earlier in the thread for getting said status credit and approximate the cost.

With this further info I will modify/add to my first reply

I understood the initial question to be simply about inherent value in maintaining status in a slow year. But given your circumstances and intent to do several international trips a year, and to be seeking award seats, then it becomes more important to keep that WP status with QF. As @samh004 pointed out, the requal level is lower. That is important as if you lost WP for a year then you would have to wait until you managed the full 1400 before you would regain WP, and thus your ability to get award seats released if needed.

Someone in your circumstances (ie multiple international trips in a year) would get more value out of WP (and especially One World Emerald) than many others
