Coronavirus (COVID-19) Respiratory illness - Effect on Travel

Luckily 2019 n-COV don't turn infected people into walking zombies (currently)o_O

Like i said Bunnings have the 3M P2/N95 masks which are also good for the bushfires.

Yeah, I've got a heap.
Just interesting that even places online are totally sold out of the Halyard ones they use at hospitals. (weeks ago)

There is now a Do Not Travel alert on the Government website and All Australians who are returning from mainland China – not just Hubei province – will be required to “self-isolate” for 14 days from the time they leave.

Anyone coming from China who is not an Australian citizen, permanent resident, dependants, legal guardians or spouses will not be allowed to enter the country. .Universities will have problems.

Why do you need them?

Singapore government has been pleading with people not to use masks if not necessary. They have been asking all residents to focus on washing hands but only use masks when they are sick and venturing outside there homes (which they are asked not to do except for visiting a doctor or hospital).

The irony is I have seen plenty of healthy people wearing masks only to remove them in a crowded hawker centre to eat food prepared by someone not wearing a mask

Government probably should have had better emergency stocks.
I wonder if there is some mechanism by which the Government can force vendors to ration certain items like they do during wartime?

An acquaintance working in the medical field in AU tried to source replacement stocks of surgical masks from their regular supplier this week as they are running low (but have some supplies left). Was told order would not be filled as the supplier is conserving existing stocks.

I got a similar email response, I spoke to a connection in the US and they told me they can still source them for something like $10.00 USD a box on Amazon.

I suspect tourism operators will be having a very stiff drink tonight. The economic and human impact of this is growing exponentially. If China do not get this under control soon a recession is a given.

ScoMo's being responsible in trying to limit our exposure to this virus. One can't use the term 'eliminate' given that an Oz citizen/permanent (Australian) resident who returned from mainland China, or anywhere else, may 'have it.'

Things may change but Jacinda Ardern in NZ has yet to announce a similar ban on arrivals from mainland China. That its inbound tourism (not just from mainland China) is about double the percentage of GDP of Australia's (around six pc for NZ v roughly three per cent for Oz) doesn't excuse her lack of action.

Not disagreeing with you that such decisions make economic growth difficult, because it tends to 'compound' (negatively, as consumer sentiment declines and hence spending) but a 'recession' is defined as 'two quarters of negative growth' IIRC so whether or not that occurs may be some time down the track.

A snippet of info...

There has been an understandable focus on containing the spread of 2019-nCoV. But less attention has been given to the need for sufficient clinical capacity to deliver care to infected individuals. The viral pneumonia caused by 2019-nCoV can be extremely severe. In the first reports of patients with 2019-nCoV, a third required admission to intensive care, with the majority developing adult respiratory distress syndrome. Even high-income countries with technically advanced health systems would struggle to provide the necessary care to potentially large numbers of patients with severe complications of 2019-nCoV. China has a well developed hospital system, but the surge capacity for intensive care will be limited. What can Chinese authorities do, together with the international medical community, to expand acute medical services, including the supply of skilled hospital staff, to meet the needs of infected patients? This question is urgent.

I opine that this is the major challenge facing all infected countries..masks all but sold out.. oxygen concentrator prices are high but also a limited resource.
Self sufficiency is going to be a challenge

So at what point do we start stockpiling food, water and ammunition?

Looking online, it's pretty hard to find anywhere with the N95 Masks, Lol.
I have nearly 40 :) I ordered them online when the smoke was really bad in Canberra and you couldn’t get them here, but the smoke cleared up and I have only used a few!

Must have been a snap decision. Smartraveller was updated today, but the update doesn't reflect the announcement yet.

Edit: just got an email from Smartraveller...
China
On advice from the Australian Chief Medical Officer, we now recommend Australians do not travel to China due to the increased risk from novel coronavirus. If you are currently in China, leave as soon as possible by commercial means. Many airlines have temporarily reduced or stopped flights.

We now advise you Do not travel to China.
Link is to the advice as above.
