Coronavirus (COVID-19) Respiratory illness - Effect on Travel

Looks like there may also be restrictions on commercial shipping as well. There was talk of a ship not being allowed to berth in the Port where I live today as it was less than 14 days since it had left China. It was allowed to berth & commence loading but I am unsure what if any restrictions were placed on the crew & precautions were taken by those who had to board the ship to perform duties relating to loading it.

And via air travel shipments too (earlier post here mentioned UPS is cancelling flights). Could quite easily mean a huge increase in price of goods from China

Hard to know yet what part of that might just be the usual CNY slow down though

Seems like the curve has plateaued
Situation remains very dynamic though so potentially due to delay in reporting of new cases

........

The QF charted evacuation flight is now supposed to arrive in LEA near Exmouth instead of DRW. From there RAAF to XCH.
QF6032.

On Sunday 2 February, at least for MEL, all mainland Chinese flights seemed to be cancelled. I haven't looked today in detail but one CZ flight to/from MEL may be operating, and JD is operating a flight from TAO that's about to land in SYD a little before 0900 hours.

However with such a high percentage of booked passengers southbound unable to enter Australia (although there'd presumably still be many northbound passengers whose visits to Oz would be concluding), expect more cancellations.

I've never travelled on them but from what one sees at Oz airports, only a small percentage of passengers on Chinese airlines are Caucasian. Of course quite a few of Chinese ethnicity may be Oz citizens or permanent residents but one can't deduce that from visuals.

Big cuts by the Chinese airlines.
China Southern

The Chinese cannot only build hospitals at a cracking pass. Their about to pump a mass of liquidity into their market.

China’s central bank said it will inject 1.2 trillion yuan ($A260 billion ) worth of liquidity into the markets via reverse repo operations on Monday, as the country prepares to reopen its stock markets amid a new coronavirus outbreak.

The numbers are not great but miles better than the original log graph that prophesied 52500 on 03/03….

What securities are involved?

I haven’t read all the thread so I apologise I feel this has been discussed.

I am wondering what people’s opinion of transiting through Hong Kong is.

I am booked on a points redemption (end of Feb) AMS HKG MEL with 36 hours in HK. I have asked Qantas twice if I can swap to another flight as I have no particular need to visit there.

Theyhave said as that is not on the list of areas with restrictions, they have no authority to change my flight unless there is other points options.
Of which there does not seem to be. Not practical ones anyway.

I am not overly concerned at this stage but as I have no actual need to go to HK I think seems a trifle silly if I can avoid it.

My wife and I are due to start our dream holiday next month to celebrate our 50th birthdays and 25th wedding anniversary. We're starting out our holiday in Scotland and to get there we have a longstanding frequent flyer booking in business on Cathay Pacific: MEL-HKG-MAN (then a train to Edinburgh).

Yesterday I bit the bullet and booked another route: at this late stage the only business class award bookings I could find take us MEL-SIN-HND-CDG-EDI: not ideal, but at least we have an alternative booked if things get worse so we don't have to disrupt or even cancel our holiday!

I'll have to pay cancellation fees for one of the routes we have booked, but that's a small price to pay for peace of mind.

How long does it take concrete to set and cure?

From the footage I saw, it looks like preformed blocks delivered and laid as support for prefab modules delivered to site and bolted and welded together on top of the blocks. No concrete slab.

Lots of young kids.
I suspect some negotiations with border officials about some of the pax caused delays.

You wouldn't want to leave anyone behind
