Coronavirus (COVID-19) Respiratory illness - Effect on Travel

Currently at home under quarantine (instructions from work for anyone who's been to Asia) as I've just come back from Maldives and Singapore.

In Singapore, I've noticed that people were taking longer in the toilets washing their hands, which is a good thing. But there were still people at Male airport and Marina Bay Sands toilets who didn't wash their hands after spending time in the cubicles!

Coronavirus: Cathay Dragon cabin crew vote to strike but will hold off for ‘maximum impact’
  • Nine in 10 union members back industrial action over airline’s response to the contagion
  • Cabin crew want a moratorium on mainland China flights, CEO earlier appealed to them not to take disruptive step

In Singapore I've noticed some people wash their hands before they enter the toilet, do their business and then just walk out. Also many people are still coughing, gargling and spitting in the bathrooms - it always was disgusting but now it's likely a health hazard.

Wonder how many that are hand washing after going to the toilet then ensure their hand is protected when they use the door to exit?

We recently moved into a new building at work, i really like how the doors to the bathroom are opened and closed by waving your hands in front of a sensor rather than ever needing to touch the door. Means you dont pick up germs from those who dont wash their hands after using the facilities.

I always use tissue to turn off basin tap and open door when leaving public toilets. Helps if building managers provide waste bin near door, otherwise drop in nearest bin after leaving.

Even better in the buildings that have designed toilets without entrance doors and use an angled raceway instead like modern shopping centres.

Good point, I raised this last week at our office, suggesting we just wedge the door open and cover up the part of the mirror to avoid reflections that could be seen from outside the doorbut a bit too much lateral thinking required for that (!)

However at Changi and in most (modern) shopping centres in Singapore, the toilets dont have doors, avoiding that particular problem in many public settings.

Celebrity cruise lines has just changed their embarkation port for next Saturday’s cruise from Singapore to Dubai. Only $500 usd available if they agree to changing peoples flights. coughet has been dropped off as well. Is time up for Singapore now?

Just checked their roll call on CC and people are leaving for Singapore right now or are already there. And one couple from Scotland flew via Dubai to get to Singapore. They are currently in transit in Dubai and don’t know of the change.

As to the Westerdam the Thai Minister seems to just shoot from the hip.A couple of days ago he suggested that Europeans not wearing face masks should be expelled from Thailand.

As to Singapore they have lifted their health warning to orange.Should not affect non Chinese visitors. If red then a problem.

All work related travels (domestic and international) have been cancelled until further notice, they will review policy end of the month. No self quarantine required yet unless staff have been to China, not sure if I need to self quarantine for 14 days after my (personal) trip to Singapore.
Also unable to find hand sanitiser anywhere 😓

Can you give us an idea of what type of industry you work in and its size.

It would appear in general Chinese factories are not back to work tomorrow - factory must supply to local Govt all movements of employees for last 14 days - after analysis Govt will then decide which factories / which employees may start work again on which date.

As publicised already with at least one car manufacturer, this will have adverse repercussions in other nations as supply chains are affected.

Financial institution, non-essential travels are cancelled but from what we can see, most (if not all) travels are cancelled especially international.

Interesting. Just a side note on Singapore. Looked the the online version of their English newspaper (Straits Time) today and most of it was about the virus. Would not exactly calm people.
