So I just had a flight an a shiny new Qantas 737, very nice! But about 30 min or so into the flight I began to realise the seat base was a little uncomfortable & it got worse from there. It seems the new seats have a lower quality foam pad but more importantly a flat base under this which I don't think was the case with earlier Boeing aircraft. I'm actually not so fussy about seating, I wasn't even thinking about it but it became quite a noticeable over time. And it's not like Boeing or their suppliers shouldn't know how to design a seat with a shaped base by now.

In the future I will try to borrow a pillow to sit on. I wonder if the Qantas purchasing people are aware that the seats are lower quality?

No, I'm not the type to lodge complaints or anything except for a serious issue. I'm just surprised the seating would go backwards when so many other things in the aircraft have improved.

Can't say I've noticed a difference in the seats.

I'm with Medhead I have been on the new 737 and can not notice a difference, may be I have a lot of padding to cover the short fall in the seat.

I believe the newer seats are physically shorter.

The top of the back rest comes to below my shoulders and when new the hard padding digs in - it can get quite uncomfortable.

This is made worse by the sliding headrest having a greater slide which when fully raised, makes for quite a cavity in the support at the neck and shoulders.

Yep. I've noticed that. :( But nothing about the base.

Aren't the airlines responsible for the fitout with Boeing just following their instructions?

Not the type to lodge complaints, but ok with complaining to people who can't do a thing about it?
Whats the point.

I agree, the seats arent comfortable in the new bsi aircraft and find the seats noticably narrower.

However row 4 has leather seatbelts?

just be glad it wasn't one of the Chinese airlines that like to use newspaper to stuff the seats when the padding wears out/falls out!

To me the new seats seem straighter. They don't have the same lumbar support as the old seats. It is ok for short flights. But i tend to notice it for longer flights. Could be just is the difference between a new seat and one that has been worn in a bit after a few years use.

Can't say I have noticed much different in the seat bottom.

Which is better than Air pacific J on a 737 with no padding at all!!!! Sept 2009 AKL - APW

There a slight differences between the older and newer seats but nothing serious. To date I have only sat in row 4 of the newer 737s and the seat feels narrower but the legroom is still OK. Haven't really noticed if they are less comfortable and I have spent 4 flights across the Tasman in recent times and have also been able to sleep.

Discussion is good....

I was more wondering if anyone else had noticed this than posting a gripe, I also wondered if Qantas had been dudded somewhat by their seating supplier (quality PU foam can be expensive) or if they are well aware.

I have posted similar before but that was railing against the gale force wind of the AVoD IFE that goes hand in hand.

After severl months the seatbacks do soften a litle (The ZK TT jobs have been around for a couple of years now) - that shoulder pain isn't so noticeable.

In reality, the seats are significantly lighter - it may compensate the additional weight of the AVOD IFE.

When I sat in the new seats in Y, my sense was that they offered less leg room than the old seats. I don't know whether this is accurate or not, but the seat in front felt much closer than for the old seats.

In J, I very much like the new ones.
