Could you live in a hotel?

I know someone who's been living at a Hilton for the past 12 years, 365 days a year. I guess they will just send him the card...but I don't think he'll care

He works for a UN agency. He uses his living allowance to pay for the room (Hilton gave him a good rate). He has a microwave in his room and that's it. Not a common lifestyle nowadays, but I guess a lot of Europeans used to live in hotels.

I'm not sure as I don't live in a hotel, but I thought I read somewhere that permanent residents don't accrue status.

IIRC long-stay rates are ineligible stays for points and status accrual.

Quite possible. As I said he's not someone really concerned by such thing...

I think I'd despise living in a hotel room (unless I had a largish suite) and I'd think the lounge access would be imperative as just somewhere to go to get out of the room! Up side would be having your room serviced daily, but what about the mundane things like washing? Surely he wouldn't be paying the exorbitant hotel rates to give his clothes a tub?

I think I'd despise living in a hotel room (unless I had a largish suite) and I'd think the lounge access would be imperative as just somewhere to go to get out of the room! It's not for everyone! For all I know, he pays for dry cleaning, but the hotel washes his shirts, undies, socks at a heavily discounted rate. After 12 years living at the same hotel let's say the staff are quite friendly with him. He had to change rooms a few times though during renovations

I lived in a suite at Rydges MEL for 10 months when moved from NSW to VIC.
Didn't mind it at all, it was very comfortable.

I would hate to live in a hotel.
I was in the lift on one of my stays at Doubletree Times Square a year or two ago and the lift stopped at a lower floor. Mum and daughter got in with a concierge pushing a cart full of worldly goods. The little girl was clutching a goldfish in a bowl. A sadder sight I've yet to see

It's a Hilton in Canada.

I also learned from him that many "long term" residents in hotels are often wealthy people "reorganising" their finances (read under fraud investigations) and also people on trial. An eclectic mix...

I live in a resort - I guess that's similar. No oven or hotplate, just microwave but there are communal bbqs. Have been here for 18 months, with at least another 18 locked in.

I lived in Beijing Grand Hyatt for nearly 4 yrs, amazing hotel and after few months they gave me a suit and I used to work for Cisco. I used to live in Hyatt, Shinjuku after that and Cisco corp rates are the best. Of course I got more than 500K hyatt points.

I spend between 100 and 130 nights a year in Calgary ( for past 3 years) and I told the client from the start that I wasn't keen on staying at a hotel ( would have probably have been Hilton).

I suggested a serviced apartment which they agreed to . Much, much cheaper for them both in terms of nightly rate ( half?) and meals ( I shop and cook for myself and they reimburse) and much better for me - space and quiet and independence. Now the other visiting company guys do the same!

I wouldn't have minded the HHonors points though.
