COVID-19 and Tennis

Would be great to also see some leadership from international tennis federation. No jab no play for all tournaments would ensure that this never happens again
I am anticipating when other tournaments see how many top seed players vaccinated in order to play in Australia and that the world did not actually end when Novax boarded the plane they might review their own vax policies

The men's singles match on centre court on Monday night after Barty's match will now be the Zverev match. The match of Lucky Loser v Serb has been moved to 1573 Arena.

An interesting report about the Novax debacle is in the BBC podcast From Our Own Correspondent where the BBC reporter in Belgrade describes the Serbian reaction.

Doesn’t he live in Marbella now?
I’m guessing he would be flying DXB-MAD unless he is returning to BEG for a hero’s welcome in his private jet

He's also a resident of Monaco, so perhaps he'll get there somehow.

For someone whos essentially broken their own laws, doesn't reside there and has scant regard for their own welfare, their mightily proud of him, hope they understand the concept of "projection"

A unanimous decision at that.

I wasn't watching the proceedings yesterday. Did the judges make an announcement that it was unanimous? Because I've just looked at the court's order and I can't tell from that whether it is unanimous or not.

A new record for hyperbole from Novak's Dad trying to compare this decision to an assassination, totally laughable.

From ABC:

Srdjan Djokovic took to social media to blast the Federal Court's ruling to uphold the government's decision to cancel his son's visa.

"The attempt to assassinate the best athlete in the world has ended, 50 bullets in Novak's chest," a post to his Instagram said.
Parenthood combined with the Gravy Train are strong motivators for what others could call irrational behaviour. :) :)

Sure was

The judgement was pretty much on the basis of "Was the Ministers decision lawful". And given the immigration act gives the minister discretion - it was always going to be hard to prove it was unlawful. All three judges unanimously agreed it was completely lawful independent of how good/bad a decision it was.

Edit: a word give=given.

Although the RT news initially reported the result as "Chief Justice Allsop made an unanimous decision to uphold the Ministers decision."
Unfortunately they have now corrected the article. Should have taken a screen shot.

You heard the word unanimous from the horse's mouth so to speak?

It's just that the media coverage of it has been generally so abysmal that I am distrustful of the media's ability to pick up legal subtleties, eg just because an order was announced doesn't necessarily mean they all agreed, unless they said out loud that they all agreed.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison statement in full

The Full Federal Court of Australia unanimously decided to dismiss Mr Novak Djokovic's application for judicial review which sought to challenge the Minister for Immigration's decision to cancel his visa.
This cancellation decision was made on health, safety and good order grounds, on the basis that it was in the public interest to do so.
I welcome the decision to keep our borders strong and keep Australians safe.
As I said on Friday, Australians have made many sacrifices during this pandemic, and they rightly expect the result of those sacrifices to be protected.
Over the pandemic, together we have achieved one of the lowest death rates, strongest economies and highest vaccination rates, in the world.
Strong borders are fundamental to the Australian way of life as is the rule of law.
Our Government has always understood this and has been prepared to take the decisions and actions necessary to protect the integrity of our borders.
I thank the Court for their prompt attention to these issues and the patience of all involved as we have worked to resolve this issue.
It's now time to get on with the Australian Open and get back to enjoying tennis over the summer.
