Yes it's been jacked up a LOT since those days.

One way to avoid it is fly out of certain exempted airports - INV is an example (eg INV-LHR-XYZ) and yes go to europe or DUB works too.

I'll probably be leaving from Paris or Madrid, but if it was London, it's easy to jump on a cheap flight to somewhere else....like Paris or Madrid.
 
If flying QFi Y, and if QF wanted, they might offer you a Bid Now upgrade, ie, they get $$$ from you, as well as a reduction of your QFF points balance.
All depends I guess on how desperate they are for $$$.
One way CDG - PER on QFs own plane, if lets say you paid $1900, (presuppose), they might offer you an extra paying them of $4500 for that J seat, totals $6400, where straight revenue J might be $6500 one way.
