Thanks for the help everyone.

I ended up booking a flight today - starting with the Sydney-Johannesburg-London option. Flying from London to NY and NY to Sydney was no probelm - the were plenty of award flights available.

I'm curious about 2 things, though:
1. When using the Qantas award flight search engine, I used the 'next day' and 'previous day' options when I had no luck for a chosen date. This did not bring up the Syd-J'Burg-Ldn option. It only appeared when I started my search with that particular date (ie. 5 Sep). I only have bronze FF membership, by the way.
Glad to hear that everything worked out for you. As some people have explained in the previous posts the award booking engine does have bugs. I have been programming for over 20 years and there is no such thing as a bug free program.

Trying different combinations, next day, previous day, search next 2 weeks could deliver unpredictable results sometimes. I guess I was just lucky I stumbled upon Sep 5th as it is the first week in September and the middle of the week.

Another "feature" of QF award booking engine is that availability for A-B is different from the availability when searching A-C and C-B separately. A real pain when checking NZ to Europe since so many routing options to check for. But hopefully all the effort will be worth it to get the award.

I found a new wrinkle in the online booking engine the other day. For a while the destination pull-down did not include AKL!

Is that not called a "SYSTEM UPGRADE"!!!!!

Not quite!

It is a transient system failure (TSF) and only happens vary rarely.

In this case I think LF was implying the removal of AKL from routings and schedules may be considered an upgrade by some unkind people. :p ;)

:D :D

I am really sorry but I think the last 2 weeks in the tropics has affected my sense of humour.

...but did it affect your golf :?:
No.

I had 6 games in 8 days and loved every minute of it. I shot 82 (with 3 three-putts) at Noble Place playing from the members tees not the championship tees. The rest of the rounds were in the mid to high 80's. Good going for me considering difficulty of the golf courses, the heat (most games started between 12:00 noon and 1:00pm) and trying to get used to slippery couch grass greens.

Can't wait for April to roll around.
