Customs have introduced a self serve GST/WET refund facility for claims where the total of the goods is under $1000, you will find a desk with forms near the normal refund office that allows you to complete the paperwork and lodge it without the need to present the goods for inspection via a queue.

Interesting to know how this will work. I can't find anything about this new system on the customs website.

So no need to export the goods? Or random checks maybe.

Fantastic!! The queue was so long and so slow moving last time I flew, that after waiting for ages, I decided I would miss my flight if I waited any longer and missed getting my refund.

Been in Brisbane since before Christmas. Not sure if you get your tax invoice back, but it doesn't seem so,

We will all need to read the tiny conditions of use! As in they may audit us within 7 years, to prove we actually had a reciept for example...

Will like it more once there is nothing hiding with the rules!

But if they've taken the receipt..

Thats another question, as in required for entering the other countries(s), warrenty/insurance purposes (while abroad)?

Will self serve give you a reciept? (Saying that yes you did spend $ and not steal that computer...)

Yep, me too (at SYD before Xmas), which was a bit disappointing - wish they'd had this around then. Mind you, the previous time I claimed was at PER and the person at the desk looked like she hadn't been troubled by anyone all day. In any case, this is a great development.

Sounds like a great idea. I have not been able to claim back my refund on more than 1 occasion as the queues were horrendous and service extremely slow.

It will be interesting to see how it works.

I don't know if I have just been lucky or not but the last few times I have come back through customs the whole process has been quick and easy and this looks like just another way to speed things up a little. Not often you want to say something good about a goverment run department .:)

I have seen a sign in SYD previously saying they do the forms when the wait is lengthy.

Hey everyone, I am looking to do this on Wednesday afternoon for some ski's and bindings which I will be checking in. Does this mean I still have to go downstairs and get them inspected first? Or can I just rock through immigration and grab one of these forms?
