I've got some Asia miles expiring soon and was looking at redeeming cabin upgrade from Y to J for HKG-ICN return.

I understand you need to buy the expensive Y fare (eg K class) and the flight must not have Y+ cabin in order to be eligible.

Just wondering how does the Asia Miles upgrade process work? Is it very similar to QF where it's based on your status/lottery pool and the requests are confirmed 24-48hrs prior to departure? or is it first come first served?

Can I call up and reserve the upgrade and then purchase the fare? I was reading on pointhacks, it mentioned you can call up and reserve for flight awards but no mention on cabin upgrade awards.

M class fare is required for upgrade.
If you logon to your MPO account, upgrade a flight segment should be an option, if seats are available. Had no issues on HKG->Australia about 6 weeks out for y->PEY

Happy wandering

I don't have a MPO account and have not booked the flight yet.
From further reading on flyertalk and the link above, it may be easier if I just do a full award booking instead which is less risky.
