Hi All,

Any thoughts on QF vs CX premium economy MEL - HKG. Both are pricing identical.

CX is on the new A350, which looks appealing and has the advantage of a direct flight.

QF would allow the (small) opportunity of an upgrade, but has disadvantage of requiring a stop in SYD. It would also be nice to fly the 747 again.

Neither, try China Airlines Y+, 2-3-2 seat config, cheap, A350 planes, great service, shell seat no more front seat in your lap,

Have not flown QF but as a regular on CX Y+, I have seen significant cost cutting in the food and drink. Meals are same as Y and wine is only from Y

QF is better of the two. Tried both and QF win for me.

CX dont have dedicated FA's just assume J or Y will come by. Blanket is standard Y.
QF have dedicated FA, more thicker J like blanket. Pillow similar situation

Other things is seat back IFE for CX vs screen in arm for QF. So easier to get out of CX seats when reclined.

Table cloth service with QF. CX is just a normal tray.

Some of my points may be old though. Haven't been on A350 Y+ with cx. Only A330.
Been on B747 & A380 with QF in Y+

Have been on CX A330 and B777, 3years ago. Didn't like the service in Y+ FA's were indifferent and had to service Y as well as Y+. But my pet hate about Y+ is the fact that when the front seat reclines, they are in your lap. I like the shell style seat that some airlines use, like China Airlines. Plus I believe most airlines with Y+ are milking it, for profit. Just look at QF, $4400 to go to LHR are they serious or delirious. China Airlines are selling Y+ to LGW for $2300, shell seats, great service, and A350-900 planes.
Sorry if I'm flogging the China Airlines horse.

Thanks all - interesting suggestions.
I'll definitely be looking at China Airlines for future ventures, although their J class wine list has me trembling with fear!
For this trip I relented and booked a QF sale fare in J as cost wasn't prohibitively more. Part of me would have like to have traveled on the old 747 via SYD but in the end convenience of direct flights won out.

Thanks for the heads up re china airlines. I am looking at a cheap way to get myself, partner, a 6 months old and a two year old over to the uk this summer (june/july) they come in at $4700 all up which is a great price. Certainly cheaper than economy on all the main players. About to pull the trigger on these...

Are you sure you're not getting any commission Dalescott from CI :p?

A bit OT but I saw the CI 350 parked at LGW last Thursday and looks quite sleek parked next to the CX 350 operating a daily service into there too. As much of a zoo LGW is, that price differential is a compelling proposition and LGW is slowly becoming a proper international airport with EK also and LHR spare slots non-existent as seen by EK starting STN services.

I notice the CI deal is on ozbargain now. Me thinks seats will go pretty quick now.

We snagged syd to ams for $4300 return for 2 adults, an infant and a child. Seems a good deal. We had quite specific June/July dates too. Seems the prices are moving outwards now though so you may be on to something there.
