Sounds serious!!
Good luck if you are stuck there
I am here, right in the path AGAIN...!!! (TC Larry)
Australians ENJOY eating your bananas because after tomorrow there will be none !
Yes I have a banana farm where all my bills are paid bye c/c to get my points, no income for the next 9 months & not many points earnt.
Life is not so good atm. Hope we and house survive it
My family is stuck up there, and the irony is they flew up from SYD this afternoon at 1:25 pm, and nobody told them better not to go. At SYD they didn't had contact with anyone thanks to the new staff-free check-in, and as tourists which only speak little English they didn't bother too much about watching news on the TVs inside the terminal. We all were aware of the cyclone coming up so had the latest news from the morning in mind which were not much worrying anyone, but not expected such a disaster.
When they arrived at CNS 3 hrs later it was all too late, no return flights available today, only got them on a 4:15 pm to SYD for tomorrow, which now will not take place as well.
Now they are in the Shangri-La and wait for hourly updates what to do. This really worries me...
I agree that the Shangri La is one of the last places that I would like to be when the storm arrives.OMG Shangri La is not somewhere I would want to be. (right on the water) Storm surges are meant to be really high not to mention the winds. I hope they can leave there in the morning and go to higher ground. I think that is a priority. Poor buggers arriving here for such destruction etc. They won't forget Cairns...! However as I said - they need to move ! it floods really all down that way. There are flood maps avail from the Cairns City Council website I believe.
I agree that the Shangri La is one of the last places that I would like to be when the storm arrives.
At least my Cairns house is on high ground and has been cyclone proofed as much as possible.
They are told the hotel is safe, hotel management does not know anything about evacuation, upper floors are safe for any floods and on the landside of the building there is a safe evacuation room especially build for such circumstances.
I know the location of the Shangri La myself very well, and this is what worries me. On the other hand the hotel management seems on top of the things and this is what worried tourists like my family look out for in such a situation.
As a sidenote, I just called the Evacuation Hotline, and they didn't even know where the Shangri La is located (probably a call centre in Brisbane). So should I trust them then if they even don't know the localities? They advised to go to an evacuation centre tomorrow morning.
Certainly, crisis management would not forget to evacuate a hotel, would they?
