Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

I've been scouting BWS for lines on clearance currently at 30% off that I will be keeping an eye on and waiting until they reach 50%. Many are outside the area I'm willing to travel to so I'll be sure to post those once they drop.

So far in Sydney I'm watching:
Hardys Eileen Hardy Shiraz
Teusner Righteous Grenache
Cirillo 1850 Ancestor Vine Grenache
Petaluma Coonawarra
Wirra Wirra Rsw Shiraz
Teusner Albert Shiraz
Hardys Hrb Shiraz

Also noticed some of the above plus the following in Adelaide
Torbreck The Steading Grenache Shiraz Mataro
Wolf Blass Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz Malbec

Unfortunately BWS prices are often well above the price you would get buying direct from the winery, not to mention their various retail competitors. So even at 50% it's often not worth buying. I was only tempted during the week because I was able to stack the 10% off a mixed 6 pack with the 15% off codes

I was going to create a list,

Irvine - Grand Merlot is listed too.

There's are a few others, but they're not discounted yet. I assume over time as their expensive wines they'll hit 50%> definitely with cashback, it'd be worth it.

Once you receive the delivery open one bottle, if it’s nice and tastes similar to Signature you had previously keep the rest. If not, return for full refund. Easy :)
Someone a few posts back said they called GWD and it was confirmed as sig... here's hoping the GWD chap was credible and not a pathological liar!

I don't think Halliday rates wineries using points. He uses a star system.
I worded that poorly. The actual message was

CANCELLED EXPORT OF BIG NAME BRAND @ 50% OFF!

This Secret Cellar deal is destined to go down in history! Winemaking Family Est 1849 Do Not Offer Their Icon Wines Consistently Rated Up To 96 Points Halliday At Over 50% Off But Tonight We Do!

50% off $18 is $36

I'm tempted to cancel and leave it cancelled, the wine mentioned is $60+

It's a bit concerning.

I noticed First Choice has some Bin 28 2013 for $38, could be appealing to someone once/if they do CB soon.

You probably meant 50% off $36 is $18. Technically speaking the offer is $16.50 and it states over 50% off so it is within realm of possibilities.

Edit and Yalamba winery is a smigeon over an hour drive. Worth to invest time as it is a very picturesque place. You can definitely try Signature there and if you are nice to them they will roll out the Octavius. Worth investing time trying to see if it is up your alley. And bypass Rockford on the way to try/pick up couple of Basket Presses / black shiraz to sweeten your trip. Probably a more scenic trip than driving from one BWS to another!

I think we gotta face it - despite the frenzy, and the reported confirmation from GWD, it seems unlikely to be Signature.

What it is who really knows? Maybe it was a made for export wine... do we even really know it's really Yalumba? (I suppose the 1849 thing is a fairly clear hint...)

Maybe, maybe not. Worth a punt for some, others not, but not clear that any of us really know.
For me, I’ll try a bottle, if unhappy, I’ll return. If it tastes good, I’ll keep. Hopefully the latter! 😀

Hmm. Signature is 14.5%.
FDR1A is cabernet shiraz, 14.0% and has a cork stopper in the photo. If it’s an “icon” wine then I’d be betting that’s what it is...closer to the 50% discount quoted too.

Have GWD had other decent Secret Cellar deals, after all they are saying this is the one of the biggest deals to ever hit...

FDR1a tends to have slightly cooler climate characteristics, though I haven't seen yalumba tasting notes for the 2016 version.

Yalumba tasting notes for Sig 2016:
very deep, dense, red in colour. Aromas of red
currants, perfumed cedar and complex, savoury,
dried herbs. This Cabernet Shiraz blend shows precise
aromatics and is classically rich through the middle
palate with exotic florals, cranberry complexity and
dark chocolate

GWD tasting note: The colour is dense red and the aromas are seamless with ripe floral aromatics, red currants, cedar and plum. Rich and dense palate with more exotic floral notes, plum, cranberry and a serious

This is how I see it. I'm reasonably satisfied that it's the Signature. If not that it must be a made for export only label that isn't on their website. Either way, if I don't like it when I open one it will go back. For $18 a bottle I am not too worried

Agree. Enough there to suggest it could be. Nothing to really exclude it.

Even if it’s some random Yalumba export wine at less than half price it’s still a reasonable throw at the stumps. For the price paid it’s only got to be drinkable.
Happy to have a punt.

Tasting note for the Yalumba Scribbler Cabernet Shiraz 2016:

It is very defined, expressive and opens with ripe, floral aromatics, red currants, cedar and dark purple plums. The Shiraz shines through in the palate which is quite rich and dense with an inky plummy juiciness. Serious tannins flow long to the finish and are quite earthy.
