Plenty of people would rather buy from reputable sources, where you know the wine has been stored correctly.

Take into account retail stores, like BWS and Liquorland don't exactly store bottles well. Most are in direct light all the time, which isn't ideal and definitely not temperature controlled.

I'm sure for most wines it's OK, but if you're spending big $$$ you don't want to serve friends, or guests bad wine.

To be fair, a lot of what I've bought in the last 6 months is for friends who let me do all the hard work of finding the bargains and reap the benefits. Also I buy a fair number of single bottles for tasting groups. Working up to retirement, in my last year of full-time work I bought over 1,000 bottles to achieve a cellar with 10 years drinking, around 3,000 bottles. Purchases since then have been to maintain that state and about now should start reducing a little. I also dig into my cellar for tastings and wine group dinners.
Along the way I have sold at least 30 dozen - Penfolds, Rockford, Wendouree and others as I stopped buying them, found I didn't really like some of them, especially the cork-sealed wines and I decided the sale price would fund future purchases.
I think there are a few people on my Forum who have more wine then me, certainly some with much bigger buying budgets then me.

Most? That's a big call. I've never seen a shop with that much natural light!

More seriously though, I've never seen a wine shop that has the entire store temp controlled. High volume stuff I wouldn't even worry about. It's not like its goign to be sitting on the shelf for very long anyway. The turnover is high. I'd also suggest that the temp fluctations in a BWS are going to be less than 99% of places people are going to store the wine once they've purchased it.

My preferred price range, depending on purpose is $10-$60, almost never over $100pb. The guiding principle is always QPR: "Is this wine fair/good/outstanding Quality for the available purchase Price."
I was lucky to be buying and drinking Penfolds and other now TWE reds from about the 69 vintage onwards, some fabulous wines, especially into the 90's when the fabulous 90, 91 Bin 707 vintages were easily available for $30 and $35. I'm only guessing at the equivalent cost in todays terms, probably around $100 maybe $150, it was a special occasion wine to drink after appropriate cellaring and fair QPR. At $600+ now the QPR for little or no increase in quality is nonexistent to me.

I still occasionally buy wines from the TWE stable, either from the chains or from Cellardoor.co, when the offered price makes QPR sense, the majority in recent time have been Seppelts Sparkling reds and St Peters.

Now Accolade have some interesting brands that they have bought over the years and have in some cases sort of left alone to do their own thing. I do buy some of theirs, mostly via cellarone. St Hallett (mostly Blackwell, halves and full bottles, Sparkling Shiraz), Grant Burge (only Filsell) Stonier (love the Reserve PN, sometimes discounted enough to tempt me and their newest buy, Rolf Binder wines, bought the Bulls Blood 2017 on opening special. Some others there, including some I used to buy in times past, Reynella, Hardys, but mostly they don't come down in price enough to satisfy my QPR calculation.
