Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

Bought another Riesling 6 pack....use the net store for 20feb code, not ebay store. You also get free postage here strangely, but it's $8 on the ebay store. nevertheless, $79.20nett for 6 is good for me with free delivery. I hope we don't get 38degree delivery days...

But a 38 degree for drinking Riesling would be perfect!

AC you beat me by a matter of seconds as I just came to the same conclusion on Penny's Hill. Anyone tried this or other Penny's Hill and have an opinion? I am tossing up between this and the brown label on Dan's.
I got it from WM in a Halliday 6 pack a little while back. I can't remember it too well, other than it was enjoyable without being outstanding. Not too sure at $20 a bottle to be honest.

So has anyone tried the 2012 Wolf Blass Brown Label, it worried me a bit when I read it had been dropped from the range since 2001 and only now sold through Dan's so therefore holding off a little before buying.

Yeah, I bought a dozen last time the offered it at $26, I like it. It's a little softer and fleshier than the 2012 Grey label shiraz, but if you like the Grey you should be Ok with the Brown.
Brown is not a hugely enticing colour for a wine label, but the vintages before they cancelled the line were pretty good, very oaky though as was the WB style back then, eased off a bit in more recent years. Brown was merged into the Grey line, it didn't disappear, just a label change, and now resurrected exclusively for DM.

There were several here who bought the Brown Label last time offered including myself - it's really quite good - it's just screaming out to allowed to sleep a few years yet.

Yea I got it back then and frankly wasn't too impressed. Tried it once again in the QF lounge recently and it was ok... Definitely not $50 wine but I'd be happy to pay $26 for it.
Hope it will develop to a fine drop in the future.

Thanks RB, any opinion on the Penny's Hill Skeleton Key?

It's a pretty solid red for $20, 15% a/v for those sensitive, but it doesn't show any real heat on the finish (but I'm not that sensitive to that anyway). Tempted, but have too many 2012 reds already. Some of my Monday Tasting Group liked it a lot.
Ben Riggs used to have a big input to wine-making, I'm not always a fan of his lush style, but they seem to have a new chief winemaker now (Winemaker - Penny's Hill), not sure when she took over.

I will add to that that I rarely drink new wines. 8 years is my normal rule. But I was surprised by this. If I could by more I would at $26 a bottle.

No a fan of Ben Riggs? Wow! He is one of my favourite winemakers. Most of the stuff he makes is stunning! Zonte's Footstep, Mr. Riggs. Personal opinion though I guess

Not always, his wines for different makers seem a bit same-same after a while, especially at the under $20 level. Don't buy much Zontes except for quaffer packs for friends.

But then Mr Riggs McLaren Vale Shiraz 2012 was one of my favourites last year and the Mitolo Furies Shiraz 2012 from Cellarmasters was pretty good too, other Mitolo wines have been all over the place the last few years, seldom buy these days. Some of the Tatiarra and Journeys End stuff is Ok too.

Good winemakers (well teams of winemakers) and good wineries can and do make a lot of very ordinary wine.

Yes of course poochio, I forgot that the last delivery of said 6 pack of Riesling in December arrived in the winemarket temperature cooled and controlled transport vehicle, encased in proper insulation material so as not to shock my palms upon the very quick decantation of said cool fluid for my drinking enjoyment. I wish..... But you are correct, a stinker of a day would really show the qualities of some of those six. Looking back at the previous invoice, the winemarket folks bumped up the retail by ten dollars. Sneaky, sure. Average the $69 first of with the $79 this time still says great deal. They also did similar with that west Australian superstars 12 red mix, where that pack went from $129 in the midmorning to $149 after noon....Talk about sharp the folks at wienstate.

Gave them a quick call, expressed my displeasure at the timing and opportunistic nature of the increase and guess what, got them for $129, then less 20 per cent. $103.20 for 12 was a good deal.

Wine Market pulling out all the stops, had a call last night, offering amongst others:

Paxton Jones Block 2012 @ around $25
Teusner Bilmore Shiraz 2014 at under $16

Do you know if these are available to the general public? The Jones Block doesn't appear on their site.

I had the same call on Monday around 5pm, but was too busy to consider what they had to offer. Looking at these prices, I am now kicking myself I didn't!
