I jumped. And, like AC, have in the past. The wines are hopefully as good as they have been previously.
I'll post here what I get in the Mystery Pack when they arrive.
I have my fingers crossed I might actually win one of the prizes this time! Five so far, and no prize!
As promised, here's my Langtons Mystery Mixed Dozen line up with an average bottle price of $50:
- Cullen Diana Madeline 2014 ($115 a bott at Dan's) (Wine Front 97)
- Langmeil The Freedom 1843 Shiraz 2006 ($100 CD & $99 at Nicks) (Wine Front 95)
- Irvine Grand Merlot 2012 ($130 CD & $100 at Wine Direct) (Gold Medal)
- Elderton Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon (not sure of vintage as haven't opened the wrapping) (Dan's have the 05 at $95)
- Murray Street Vineyards Sophia Shiraz 2007 ($75 CD) (Halliday 95)
- Rivetto Barolo Serralunga d'Alba 2012 (price unknown, but Langtons auction guide price is $60-$80)
- Giant Steps Harry's Monster Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2014 ($55 CD)
- Kilikanoon Greens Vineyard Shiraz 2013 ($50 at Langtons) (Halliday 89)
- Twelftree Strout Grenache 2012 ($45 at Just Wines) (Halliday 95 and Wine Front 92)
- Francois Carillon Puligny-Montrachet White Burgundy 2014 ($110 for the 2012 on Langtons)
- Toolangi Paul's Lane Chardonnay 2012 ($40 at MWG) (Halliday 97)
- Seppelt Drumborg Vineyard Riesling 2016 ($35 at Dan's & $30 at Nicks) (Halliday 97)
My initial thoughts, you always get better value going for the Mixed Red/White Pack than the straight Red Pack. This is how Langtons do the equivalent of the VinoMofo returns mystery mix packs (forgotten what they call them after 18 months of not buying from them).
It's an interesting mix.
There's some massive Reds that I will probably shift on. Anything over 14.5% and I'm out. I'm really looking forward to trying the Barolo and the White Burgundy. Not sure the Langtons price for the White Burgundy is correct. But, whatever, White Burgundy is my favourite type of White Wine. I'm also looking forward to the Langmeil - the fruit comes from one of the oldest surviving vineyards in the world. Although I have 4 of the DMs, I might be tempted to dip my toe and try one early given the average price paid. I'll probably be dead before the Grand Merlot will be ready! If it is anything like the ones I've tried before. Looks like the runt of the litter is the Kilikanoon - an 89 from Halliday is a bit of a shocker.
Overall, I'm a pretty happy chappy. The value and a bit of out-of-the-ordinary is there to justify the $599 paid.
