Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

Anyone tried the Reynella Basket Press Shiraz 2017? It's available on Cellarone for $37 a bottle, not much info available about it online.

Generally a lovely wine that rewards cellaring. The 2017 isn't rated by Halliday yet, but all vintages he rated between 2008 and 2016 were 95-97 points.

I have a friend who used to work in the wine industry. Sometimes they would auction excess stock with Grays. If the bidding was low, they would buy it back themselves so that the label would not be diminshed. In fact, they saw it as a form of advertising if they needed to do this to help preserve the prices of their product. Yes there was a cost to them in doing this, but better than letting it be seen being sold too cheap.
I'd translate that as shill bidding (illegal), Artificially raising price, they either get outbid WIN, or get their product back without to much loss WIN... just fraudulent.

Any $5-7 recommendations? It seems all the Instagram wine drinking experts really love wine and that's about how much they spend a bottle.

Are we getting ripped off paying $20+ hahaha

Gotta buy some $5 wine and see how it compares 😳😬

From my personal experience, aim for something at around a $40 RRP and purchase on special for around $20. There are a few really decent quaffer wines that are always around the $20 that can be had even cheaper (ie. Epsilon, Crampton White, Sons of Eden) i don't think I've come across a $5 wine that I've found worth drinking... Maybe a few $10, or Church Block at $15 on special. (Not taking into account stuff like Reynella cellar release that many of us picked up for $4)

Agree with this. I'm not a wine snob (yet), but do enjoy good quality. Everyone else will have a different price point when it comes to their choices.

For a mid week "quaffer" I tend to look for something reduced 30+% to around $15 mark, from various specials (DM under wraps, Vinomofo etc). My current ones:
2015 Glenlofty Estate Shiraz ($14)
2017 Collab and Bloom Shiraz ($15)
2016 St John's Road The Prophet ($13) - yet to try but just arrived

And then I have my "nicer ones" (also each reduced by 30-50%) that I try save for other occasions, such as:
Gibson The Dirtman Shiraz ($20)
St Hallett Blackwell Shiraz ($23)

Again, I guess everyone has their own price point. Some may consume my "nicer ones" as a mid week quaffer, and drink $60-$100 bottles for a nicer occasion. I feel like my palate is slowing working its way up the chain, which is a good and bad (for the wallet) thing.

Wolf Blass Grey ;)

Wynn’s CSM for $5 was a decent wine.

Also,
Reynella Shiraz 2015 ($4)
Leconfield Cab Sav 2015 ($5)
Wynns Black Label Cab Sav 2016 ($8)

Every now and then a good deal for quality wine at quaffer price comes up such as the recent WB Grey allowing us to drink decent wines any day, avoiding real quaffers.

Hey mate, after you've ransacked adelaide last week. Are you able to let me know what's left at BWS?

keen to pick up a few of the unlikely leftovers :)

These were all online orders from recent years. This year, apart from WB Grey deal there were some $5 bargains at Liquorland, First Choice and Vintage Cellars such as McWilliam’s Canberra Syrah and Rymill The Dark Horse Cab Sav.

I went the chalambar, $76 was too good to pass up. I personally think it's better than a quaffer, especially with some cellar time
