Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

last week I tried the third bottle of clarendon hills brookman 2014, it is totally corked/tained. Those wines haven't been bought nearly 4 mths, hope dm can refund.

I just open a Hickinbotham 2012 tonight. The cork looks good, moisture, far less hole, fine printing, better quality than brookman 14. smell from the bottle, vanilla, chocolate and red fruit. like the aroma and happy. I though my bottles are different from you guys. after the first sip. it is same as brookman. it tastes like corked. Base on so many people having the same issue, I guess, these wines must be infected by the barrel, not cork. The barrel may be not clean and bacterial ruin the wine.

I will return them tomorrow.

It does happen that a tainted barrel affects a whole batch of wine, but it's very rare and is not the case for the Clarendon Hills wines - based on some I've tasted and many reports from my subscribers.

A "corked" wine is affected by the presence of the chemical TCA (2,4,6-Trichloroanisole) Cork taint - Wikipedia
If the TCA comes from the cork, it will affect the wine from day 1, I've seen barrel samples drawn the previous day and sealed with a cork rank with taint on opening 24 hours later. It doesn't get much worse with time, once opened and noticed it will not breathe off.

Pretty much all wineries stopped cleaning barrels with Chlorine-based agents many years ago, so barrel source is very uncommon.

Bacterial spoilage of wine is something else completely, as is spoilage from unwanted yeasts such as Brettanomyces (brett), which is mostly the result of poor hygiene in the winery Brettanomyces - The Australian Wine Research Institute

As to the Clarendon Hills wines, some are definitely showing cork taint, but most show the signs often associated with excessive heat, probably moderate over a long period as there is little or no sign of cork travel associated with rapid extreme heat. I don't think they come directly from CH, they may or may not have returned from overseas, DM aren't willing to say.

Woolworths/Dan Murphy/Langtons, all their arms that have flogged this stuff have done damage to what little reputation they had amongst more knowledgeable wine buyers. At least most branches don't make any fuss when they come back to start the cycle all over again.

Such a shame as I was fortunate that the first bottle I opened of it was great but the second was ruined like many others. Just can’t risk the hit and miss on these and DM must know it too and selling cough wine

There are such big amont of ruined wine. if there are caused by TCA, it doesn't make sense that CH sealed the bad cork with a $90 bottle wine for 3 years and didn't find it. TCA crok doesn't have that high percentage. That is why I assume it came from the barrel. I have no idea how winery cleans their barrel in practice.

To my 4 bottles I have tried, it isn't suffered from the heat. it smells and tastes definitely a fault. It also tastes bitter I just sold my Le Nex du vin, not sure it is TCA.

Today I return them and also the order from last Nov without any problem(same wine brookman 2014).

This was the url for 2015 The Thing, now points to the 2016 as well.

Sam Kim note:
Sorby Adams
The Thing Shiraz 2016
Rating: 97
A magnificent expression; the opulent bouquet shows blackberry, plum jam, dark cocoa, cake spice and cedar characters with nuances of tapenade and game. The palate exhibits outstanding concentration and depth, delivering layers of delicious flavours together with lavish texture and plush mouthfeel, superbly framed by velvety tannins. The wine is powerfully graceful with a seamless flow to an impressively long engaging finish. At its best: now to 2036. AU$150.00. www.sorbyadamswines.com. Sept 2019.

All seems to correlate except the alcohol %. But maybe it's just Dan's mistake, changed the vintage of the Sorby Adams to 2016 but not the % alcohol (the 2015 was 14.7%, 2016 15%)

It's Sorby Adams. These issues have previously been identified and discussed.

This wine has also previously featured in a number of 'value' packs put together by DM.

Free bottle of Grant Burge Shadrach with $199+ spend at The Wine Collective. 2013 vintage supposedly isn't the best, but still an $80 bottle. I picked up the following for $239 including shipping (pre-cashback):
6 x Vasse Felix Filius Cabernet 2017
3 x Grant Burge Filsell Shiraz 2016 (looks to be a good vintage)
1 x Thorn Clarke Terra Shiraz 2017 (wanted to try this one)
1 x Grant Burge Shadrach Cabernet (FREE)

I'm able to get a 12.5% discount through work, which brings the total price down to $19 per bottle. Not too bad.

cellarmasters 20% cashback at cash rewards.

Note 1: Coupon code BONUSPOINTS is ineligible for Cashback but 20CASHREWARDS (gets you 20% off a >$99 spend will stack - stated that it will not work on penfolds or champagne).
Note 2: You may not get the 20% cash back if you use a gift card.
Note 3: Not all Penfolds removed from website (Penfolds Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz (6-pack) 2017 Penfolds Reserve Bin A Chardonnay (6-pack) 2017)
Note 4: Not all champagne has been removed from web site (A Sensational Champagne Mix (6-pack) Champagne Mix (6-pack))

An old quote, but I've just been told that the 20CASHREWARDS code from 20/2 did not go through on that occasion. It didn't track automatically at the time (though the clickthrough was registered) and they've only just got around to deciding the outcome. No big deal, but does anyone have any ideas about pursuing it? Other clickthroughs have worked on the same computer, for the most part.

Their message to me:
"We were happy to have the opportunity to try and rectify your rewards, however we did not have success on this occasion. The store has notified us that your purchase with Cellarmasters has not been attributed to Cashrewards and therefore we will not be paid for this sale.

There are quite a few reasons why transactions may be attributed to another channel other than Cashrewards. Here are a few the store has specifically told us about:
Having opened other web pages (including search sites, social media, other store sites) or web browsers whilst visiting the store;
Clicking though to another page from a banner or ad on the store's webpage whilst shopping;
AdBlock/Antivirus/cleanup application tasks may remove tracking cookies (which are required to track transactions); or
Use of a coupon code not listed on Cashrewards."

Unfortunately in that kind of situation, you may be out of luck. It has happened to me only a few times, luckily just on smaller purchase items. I have had one successful outcome where Cashrewards claim " to dip into our own pocket and honour the expected rewards amount for this purchase ". In that situation, there was ample proof of similar consecutive purchases, and click history was all timestamped minutes before purchase receipt.

I went 8 Filsell which got me to 199, Shadrach for free. Then applied $35 worth of points, reducing it to 18.33 a bottle. Good outcome.

Does anyone have any experience of returns with DM? I got some of the Mitolo The Nessus the other day (online but collect from store) and wasn't my cup of tea*, happy to have credit for a return rather than reimbursement....

*seemed to read in the T&C that they only accept returns on faulty wine

I had no issues returning some a while back.
They did ask why - but seemed to be out of interest rather than looking to deny the return
