Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

Any thoughts on todays JD wine deal (#667):

* Single Vineyard Margaret River Chardonnay
* 2020 Vintage
* Handpicked from 25 Yr old vines
* Wild fermented for 8 months in French Oak (25% new)
* Gingin clone (balance a mix of Clone 3 and Cone 5)
* Whole bunch pressed
* Fully labelled/screwcap
* 13.4% alc
Hutton Reserve Chardonnay, very tempted but must resist due to cellar space restrictions.

Price per bottle is slightly higher than somewhere like DM but Head Wines have an offer until Saturday that if you buy a straight dozen they will add an aged magnum of the same series of wine. Doesn’t show at checkout.

Have you tried any more of these? I noticed some bottle variation when I had mine 2018
I don’t have much experience with Blackwell so it’s hard to comment. But I had another 2021 tonight and it just doesn’t taste like an expensive wine, it’s indistinguishable from Faith to me.

That would be disappointing! I have a dozen of the 2020 in the cellar. Didn't touch it yet as I was letting it rest until it is 7-8 years old but maybe I should look at opening one soon to check it out...

Note I'm referring to the 375ml bottles, I'm not sure if that is a factor or not. But after finishing the Blackwell I opened a 2018 Schoolhouse from CW Wines. Cabernet rather than Shiraz, but the complexity was in a different league (better) than the Blackwell.

I've had the 2018 blackwell in 375ml and found it as good as the 750ml version

I do find quite a bit of variation with Blackwell in general but tends to happen with corked versions

There should not be much difference in a wine if it is in a 375 or 750ml bottle when young but as it get older, the one in the smaller bottle would age quicker.

I follow Konstantin Baum on YouTube. He is a Master of Wine and he did a blind comparison of the differences in ageing that occurs between 4 different bottle sizes. It gave me food for thought re ageing.

The uncontrollable variable is the use of cork seals.

I have 4-5 vintages of Blackwell in halves and 750ml bottles, all under screwcap, I might do a tasting with one of my tasting groups and see if we can match them up or find big differences.

Thanks for the link. Very interesting

Anyone have an opinion on Tamburlaine 2019 Point 65 Shiraz Viognier. Half price ($13) at BWS, which is incidentally also half the Dan's price.

Dans has Wynns Shiraz $9.95 per bottle on member price. Man, this is cheap cheap cheap. Sadly only the Shiraz and not the cab sauv.
Pretty much the standard on special price. Shouldn't be more than a few weeks at a time before you'd be able to get it at this price somewhere.

Might be time to check the Dan Murphy's clearance bins, popped into the Brickworks store today - about 15-20 bottles of 2020 Filsell at $25, some Schwarz Wine Co Thiele Rd Grenache 2022 at $19, Lanson organic champagne down to $50, amongst others haphazardly thrown into three display barrels. Good luck hunting
