Hi all. Can anyone suggest the best plan of action regarding a data sim for my trip to your lovely country, flying from the UK to Aus shortly.
I was hoping to be able to buy a micro sim for iphone an use its hotspot so i could use a laptop on it as well internet on my phone. Was planning on buying an optus $2 plan, but recently read they're stopping Iphone hotspot on it... :(
So any suggestions before I get there so im more clued up would be great and I thank you all in advance.

Telstra sell a pre paid micro SIM.

A $30 pre paid on the cap encore offer will give you 400mb of data and also $250 worth of calls.

Try Woolworths, a $2 sim and $29 recharge (less 10% if you join everyday rewards) will get you 5gb as well as $500 worth of calls etc

Woolworths Mobile

They have a micro sim, and if you happen to be in need of Gas, buy the Sim and recharge at the Caltex Woolworths station and get $15 off any petrol you buy.

Be aware that Woolworths mobile also prevent iPhone tethering. Probably best to go with the Telstra $30 Cap Encore offer as suggested. Plus if you need more data you can purchase the plus packs with the $30.

At the rates Telstra charge that is about 5 phone calls

The call rate of that is app 89c per min plus call connection fee.

It is also give the user after 6pm calls to all standard numbers in Aust free of charge.

Thanks guys and thanks adamonline, the woolworths deal was looking favourable, but it looks as though Telstra wins uptil now
I really should have researched all this before, im leaving on Monday so its all last minute. Again. lol
Thank you to all your replies you have really helped. :)

You will be able to purchase the SIM card from the International airport.

There are a few options to choose from. It really depends on how long you are going to be in Australia, how much data you expect to use and where you are going to travel. Telstra have the best coverage (good for remote areas), usually have the fastest speeds, but they are also the most expensive. The others are normally a bit cheaper.

You can pickup a 3G USB Telstra modem for $29 from Coles with 1Gb, might be a better option than using the phone tethered, that way you are not locked into Ts expensive rates for calls, if you don't expect many calls to be made then Telstra makes sense. There is usually one chain that has the $30 starter pack going for $10 that will give you 400Mb etc.

Telstra Next G will be available on Boost prepaid from January 2013.
