Hi guys,

I have recently applied for this card for the family. I think it's a great way to get SPG points specifically and I'm posting this offer due to the 45,000 referral that's a real drawcard as once transferred to SPG points can be pooled within the family.

  • 30,000 AMEX MR points sign on bonus = 15,000 SPG points
  • 45,000 Refer a friend bonus there after = 22,500 SPG points
  • 3x points at Supermarket and Petrol should you wish to use to accumulate SPG (note below)
  • $99 fee
  • NB David Jones points convert for 2:1 basis so not as valuable as normal Amex Edge points for example which are more flexible. It's really about the signon and referal bonus
  • Refer a friend by 31st July, Apply by 15th August (current dates)
  • NB Family members all hold other Amex cards and received points and have held this card specifically also but >12months ago.

I find this a great way to get SPG points specifically as its 30,000 MR = 15,000 SPG for $99. The reason the current offer is good is that you can get a 45,000 referal bonus. So in my instance I have referred 2 family members and have 30,000+45,000 from each of them to pool + my initial 30,000 to raise 180,000 MR = 90,000 SPG for $99x3. SPG points can be pooled between family members so you can send from AMEX to SPG and then pool them together in one account.

MY fingers are crossed that SPG has another bonus transfer like last year when 20,000 SPG converted to 30,000 AA. To give an idea of what you can get with SPG/AA, 80,000 AA points gets you a return business class ticket to anywhere in Asia.

Anyhow, I recommend getting this card for AA accumulation purposes 1.5SPG points per $1 at supermarkets and petrol stations or just for the sign on bonus of course.

Interesting post. I have the basic DJs Amex CC and use it specifically for petrol and woolies as it converts to 2.25 points per $1 spend at Qantas.

I didn't know Amex Rewards could be transferred to SPG.

You might also want to check out the American, Amex SPG CC. It has a sign up bonus. No international FX fees, and gets 5 points per $1 at SPG. You can also link this to Uber and you get points sent to SPG for uber rides.

I was able to setup this American card due to my Aussie Amex account. However I think it also helped that I had a US bank account.

Membership Rewards Ascent (and Ascent Premium) points can also be transferred to SPG! Apart from a Diners card it is one of the few ways for those with Aus CC's to earn AA points.

Hi guys,

The promotion has changed slighly

- Signon Bonus 30,000 (same as always)
- Referral bonus 15,000 (back to standard rate)

As an example if two people were to sign up with this within the same family you would get 75,000 (30+30+15) AMEX which converts to 37,500 SPG. If you spend an additional $1,666 at a supermarket / petrol station you will have 5,000 extra points to get you to the 80,000 Amex / 40,000 SPG points mark.

The plot thickens however as for a limited time (until September 14th 2016) you will now get 30,000 AA points for 20,000 SPG points which is where this really becomes interesting. I only transfer points during this promotion so it's perfect timing.

Edit - if you don't have an SPG account open it today as it needs to be active for 30 days before you can transfer between accounts. OR signup before 14th August.

I got my card on the 5th business day after applying, points post almost immediately once when you hit the 3 spend outside of David Jones requirement (and they show on your statement as cleared) and in my instance the referral bonus came through when the person was approved so you have around 6 weeks to get your new card.

Even if you are getting this only for yourself it's certainly worth getting started accumulating SPG points. Not to mention AMEX are super good about rewarding existing customers.

Australia's highest-earning Velocity Frequent Flyer credit card: Offer expires: 21 Jan 2025
- Earn 60,000 bonus Velocity Points
- Get unlimited Virgin Australia Lounge access
- Enjoy a complimentary return Virgin Australia domestic flight each year

AFF Supporters can remove this and all advertisements

An additional benefit for those considering, is the cash back offers that I have received on each new card application

- Spend $30 get $15 at Woolworths
- Spend $40 get $20 at David Jones (works on vouchers with any small purchase of non voucher goods ie $1.50 butter dish)

Less relevant to me but still quite good for those who shop here generally
- Spend $300 get $150 back at Langtons.com.au (getting some Champagne or Spirits 50% off)
- $50 David Jones Voucher for $200 spend (on full price fashion) this is Via David Jones not an Amex offer

On 2 of 3 cards received this today (not sure why it was selective)
$10 back on $30 at Woolworths
$50 on $300 at Harvey Norman

So far I've collected $10+15 cash back on Woolies, $20 on DJ's, so $45 in total. I'm sure come November Shop Small I'd have more than covered my annual fee making the points earned at little to no cost. I'm considering getting myself a few bottles of Champagne as nice gifts and you can get some of what they offer you up in the sky at 50% off to those that drink outside of airline lounges and first class cabins!

Thanks to anyone who will use my link
