David Jones American Express - what have I done?!

I recently cancelled my AMEX Platinum Edge and changed to David Jones Platinum AMEX thinking I was still getting the 3/pts per dollar etc but with the added bonus of 4/pts per dollar at David Jones. I have just gone to transfer my points from Membership Rewards to Velocity and it says that it is 2 reward points to 1 Velocity Pt. Why on earth would anyone use this card? I feel so stupid as I don't remember seeing this - everything is set up just the same as the Plat Edge but this is really coughpy. I am going to call AMEX this morning and see if I can change back. Anyone else found this out the hard way? I feel so stupid!

Yeah the DJs Amex is only useful in my opinion if you're after qantas points (e.g. 2.25pts:$1 At supermarkets and petrol)

I have it for QF points. It's pretty good for that if you have high DJ's, supermarket and petrol spend.
Combining it with DJ's online through the QF Mall is even more lucrative.

Amex are far from upfront with the DJ MR programme which is disappointing as they are usually a good company to deal with IME.

Before changing back, look at the value you can get from transferring DJMR to SPG. The transfer rate is as good as standard amex 2:1 and there is a lot of potential given 0.5 SPG=0.625 American Airlines/Alaska miles and many many others

Yes, its a bit of a shocker and quite underhanded behaviour from an otherwise upfront company (Amex). They use language to strongly intimate that the DJ scheme is the standard 'membership rewards' when in fact its far from it. Very nasty.

DJ is still pushing this card strongly in store too. I was accosted only a couple of weekends ago by an marketer as I was shopping. Even the guys n girls selling the product don't know the fine details - I had to educate the lady as to just how bad value the card she was trying to sell me really was.

I mainly use the card for SPG and HHonors transfers and free gift wrapping and delivery. The free delivery is useful for buying one or two small value items.

SPG is good, otherwise this card is a dud. Take your sign on bonus, burn it ( move to SPG) and move on.

Agreed. Transfer to SPG. If you are interested, right now you can transfer from SPG to AAdvantage with 20% bonus as well. AA has one of the best programs for redeeming Oneworld awards.

Thanks everyone. I've changed back to the Plat Edge! It would be good if they made it clearer that the point do not convert in the same way as their other cards.

Hi Dave,

It was very easy as I had only held the DJ's card for three or so weeks. My Plat Edge was still showing up in my online account but just cancelled. They reactivated it and it was all pretty easy. I think if it had been any longer though I would have had to reapply. Hope this helps. Ana.

I love the DJ Amex card & in my situation has seen my QF points sky rocket, particularly for the spend at Supermarkets/Petrol Stations & Of course DJ's ( through the Qantas mall earns 8 QFF points per dollar spent).

Although This card doesn't get much use elsewhere at any other merchants unless Amex has attractive promotions ( ie spend $15 at 7/11 & receive a $5 credit)

You wouldn't pick this card if one was chasing VA points , that's quite obvious.

If I was actually shopping at DJ's I'd be more tempted to take the entertainment book 10% off DJ's gift card. For large value items a price match + gift card equals big.savings.
