Hi brains trust,

My partner and I will be flying to UK for Christmas - our current plan is to fly book a return flight MEL to somewhere in Asia flying QF Y, with a day or two stop over each way, and then fly to Paris for a couple of days probably on Finnair in J, return flights same way, and a separate flight CDG-LHR (ugh, BA).

So a couple of questions -
1. is there anywhere in Asia where the return flight to Oz will be a daytime flight?
2. are there any options I haven't thought of that involve not too expensive J flights to Europe on a OW carrier?
3. things are further complicated by my partner's ADHD, which is well controlled by medication - which is obviously prescription, and we can get a letter from the doctor explaining it's necessary, but I understand as an amphetamine it's effectively illegal in a lot of countries. There's no way we can go on a three week trip without his medication - he would be incredibly unhappy and I would probably kill him.

Advice please :)

You will not be able to get a day flight from Asia to MEL on Qantas. Jetstar do have a day flight from Bali, but if you broaden to oneworld, you can get CX or MH day flights and broaden even further TG, SQ and some Chinese carriers have day flights too.

Thanks dajop - MH may be an option. I've never worked out how to get CX flights down to a reasonable cost - they're almost always outrageously expensive compared with other carriers in my experience. Not really keen to make China (other than HK) the stopover, purely because of the palaver of getting visas. And I'm definitely not going outside OW - I need to maintain my status and I want my platinum benefits!

If you look at MH, someone around here mention about getting a QF flight number of the MH flight for better earning.

Emirates currently have a KUL-MEL flight (which I'm sure would have a QF codeshare) which is more or less a day flight, however I think they are removing this before Christmas.

If you don't mind spending a night in Brisbane, there's another QF-coded EK flight (QF8432) that departs Singapore at 3pm and arrives in BNE around 1am.

I didn't think QF codeshared with MH but happy to be corrected.

KUL will be dropped from 31 October.

Definitely an option to spend one night in Brisbane, thanks.

Not that minor a consideration - I need the flights to earn QF SCs!

MH will earn, jsut I heard a QF flight number will earn better. Having thought about it, maybe the QF codeshares are only on intraasia MH flights. Sorry if I've mislead you.

I wouldn't say "MH will earn", rather MH may earn, depending on the fare class booked. The cheaper fare classes earn no QFF points or status credits. Something to watch out for.

Try Perth. We hate the o'night flight from Bali so flying through Perth departing at 8.30am.

1. CX139 HKG-SYD, CX156 HKG-BNE, CX163 HKG-MEL, CX171 HKG-PER, MH125 KUL-PER, MH141 KUL-SYD, MH129 KUL-MEL. QF has none, JL has none, BA has none.

2. AY J fares out of BKK tend to be better than other Asian cities. Maybe a CX fare to BKK? CX fares to BKK do allow stopovers in HKG if you prefer HKG over BKK as your stopover. If you choose to only transit in BKK, make sure that you get all your tickets in a single PNR via a TA so that your bags get through-checked.

3. Avoid the middle east...

I can provide some input on the third question as Ms 13yo is ASD and takes Vyvance (a once-a-day analogue of Ritalin). Back in 2013 we took the family to the USA and we made sure before we left that we got a covering letter from her pedeatrician advising of her condition and medication and dosage. We showed this to Customs outbound with the medication and showed it to CBP on arrival in the US as well as when leaving.

If you're going to stop over in Singapore, read this... Bringing Personal Medications into Singapore | HSA | Health Sciences Authority

With the combinations of flights and classes how much are you looking to spend each on return flights?

May I suggest you give Finnair a call and see how much their combi fares are from Australia to Europe. My boss has recently booked a J flight via Finnair to Europe and it was a very good price... so perhaps their combi fares will also be good and it'll also be on the same ticket. You can fly QF/CX in Y to HKG and then Finnair J from there. So can get a day flight to / from Asia
