Dealing with poor manners

Usually they offer you a flower and ask for a penny. If you take out a wallet they steal it, or something else while you are distracted.

Ah, thanks. They've got fat chance of stealing my wallet, which is (a) in an inside pocket of my jacket, and attached to the pocket with a lockable chain, and (b) not at all likely to be taken out if a gypsy is offering me anything!

In my experience "F... Off" works just as well. Encountered 8-9 year kids in Paris subway back in 1994.

I started off with that, but I find a guttural Nein much more satisfying because then you both remember history and what one german did to 7 million gypsies. So it's like an evil thinking persons F off. The eiffel tower gypsies literal ran and called out to another group that was approaching me, "deustche".

Flower trick? I'm curious?

Slight variation. Bottom of the Spanish steps in Rome. They give a lady of a single rose - "For a beautiful lady". Then watch to see which male she is with, then another guy demands 10 euro from that bloke for the flower. The conversation we had was a bit more detailed that what I wrote, but fortunately I'd heard the guy say it was free. These guys were actually more sub-continent types than gypsies. This flower thing would actually be a good one to counter scam with some planning. I'd love to go on a bit more about my experiences with scams but getting off topic.

Umm, so they have reason to stab you and cut the wallet off? I got to the point of having a sacrifice wallet or just having single 5 or 10 notes in random pockets.

No doubt I'll get flamed the hell out of, for this. But it is just an observation not a judgement. I understand diabetics need to do their thing, but I would have expected they would want to do that in private rather than in the middle of a lounge. Just saying, not a judgement in anyway.

edit: And he's done it again just now. Is that right for diabetics to inject so often?

In the BNE business lounge a couple of days ago and sitting at the desktops after arriving from SYD.

A guy sitting at the row of desktops in front with a laptop/iPad next to him and what appeared to be skype at full blast with his wife and son on the screen. His sons voice was so loud you could hear it on the other side of the lounge.

Is being away from your loved ones reason enough to subject the rest of us to this sort of rubbish? Why can't people do this in their own time instead of when they are around others? Do they really think that others do not mind?

The sad part was a Qantas cleaning staff member walking around and smiling and laughing while this conversation was taking place.

lol, nice one.

Dunno if that's necessarily what would happen. I usually try to make it a public display of security - eg an easily visible chain (say a small wallet, chain on the belt buckle). Why bother with me if the person behind me can be gotten easily.

Found the Spanish steps (and most of Rome) rather gypsy free - lots of trinket sellers though.

I presume just checking the blood sugar level? Or injecting? If the latter...curious, what about the waste?

It wasn't the thumb thing. First time was definitely a syringe into the "fat"* around the stomach. Second time was an injection but it looked different, like an epi-pen. Anyway, didn't bother me, but I could imagine it bothering others.

* The guy wasn't actually fat, so it was a roll of flesh.

Rome was definitely different to Paris Gypsy-wise. A more eclectic mix of scammers and ticket sellers as you say. Half way down the spanish steps was my second most scared time of the trip. Got there through lets to photos and such. Then I realised there was about 3 guys hanging around who did have cameras and didn't look very tourist-y. One of them was the string trick guy. I just said lets get outta here. (most scared was when I thought the shell game guys in Barcelona might stab me ;))

I've worked with a couple of diabetics who simply injected when required (without making a big show of it). Didn't bother me (odd, because I generally can't stand watching needles), though I can understand it may bother some.

Diabetics usually take long and short acting preparations (in 2 different pen syringes). Maybe he was doing them then? Most do the long acting at night, and the short acting with meals, but it varies. Most are very in tune with their bodies and manage it well.

So the 'evil eyes" helped in this case! I usually get some 'big shot" talking arrogant & loudly on their phone about some deal/project/ or just how wonderful they are, as every second word is me, myself, I.. so everyone in the lounge has to listen to their cough :(

Some guy was doing that on Sunday night in CBR

Lost track of how many times he said "due diligence"

Another possibility if before a long flight it might have been a blood thinning injection.

I hate those things! Broke my ankle & had to wait 2+ weeks for the swelling to go down so they could operate.

Spent the first few days in hospital and once they realised the swelling was going to take a while they gave me the option to go home rather than wait in the hospital! Even though it was Nth Shore Private I jumped at the chance to get out of there & went home.

Had to stab myself in the gut everyday to minimise blood clotting:(

I then went back & had the operation however, hit the morphine relief button too many times & was confronted with you have 15 mins to empty your bladder or we are going to .........:shock::shock:

I have never worried or tried as hard.....as I did in that 15mins:!:

and had some muscle relaxant whilst I waited. There were 3 people in the same area (all female) and they weren't making much noise.

Then after the very nice massage I had some more muscle relaxant
...

Is it me???

I'm thinking it's the ketamine

In perspective, at least he didn't follow my grandfather's example and pack his diabetic kit in checked luggage because of security requirements and then spend the day flying BNE-xPER-KTA.

This technic has worked for me with the added words "F off" when dealing with gypsies & other types whilst seeing the sights of Europe.

I always snap at gypsies 'je ne parle pas anglais' (I don't speak English) and they normally leave me alone thinking I'm a local. I'm sure though that my Australian accent may rather undermine my clever ploy. I have had occasion too to growl 'nick off'; I never swear as they have been known to get their little mates to come over with a bit of cold steel.

Really? In broad daylight? When they can't even see where it is? I suspect msot pickpockets will just pick an easier target.

A new acronym for those that have no consideration for others, be they FC BC PE or cattle class. They are the PITS . Pigs In The Sky.
