Can anyone provide a definition for "non-rigid garment bag"?

I have a Samsonite DurantXTLite garment bag (Samsonite Garment Bag Details) which meets all of the size limits as per the Qantas website and after travelling with it for 2 years I was stopped last Thursday in Sydney.

I had a laptop bag and the garment bag with both items at 12.9kg, so weight was not an issue, the gate attendant said it was a rigid bag so could not be taken on. I challenged this saying that there was a piece to strengthen the handle but the bag was very much soft and was within both the weight and dimension requirements. The male attendant said I had to put it through the test unit and after I did so with the female watching she said it was supposed to be folded and fit into the square test unit. As I was explaining this was not correct the male attendance came back over and said to put it through the long test piece unfolded, which I did and it passed through but he said sorry it still cannot go, his decision was final.

I asked to speak to a supervisor and he said that he would have to take me off the flight and get someone to come and speak with me. I initially declined but later thought I would like to speak with a manager as this was wrong, I asked him if he could get me on the next flight but he replied then next 3 flights are fully booked. I had no choice but to check my bag and get on the flight.

This was a semi regular fortnightly flight in J so I am a tad peeved and will be taking it further with Qantas management however was interested in others experience or feedback.

The description states it is an approved 'cabin bag', not necessarily an approved 'non rigid garment bag'. It is not what I was thinking a 'non rigid garment bag' would be....

Having said that, I would have thought that QF would have let it slide for a J pax. But this is the quality service people pay QF extra to receive.

Tend to agree with @Pleb Status this is what I use as a non ‘non rigid garment bag’ however I am sure others may disagree.

@Adam Brophy if you have had no problems in the past couple of years maybe keep using it and after the next few trips you can make a judgement if this is another QF crack down or just staff interpretation of the rules.

I'll be interested to hear if QF provide a firm answer, as I've had a Qantas branded leather garment bag (similar style to the Samsonite mentioned above) for well over 20 years. Whilst not used in recent times, I have used it for international flights as a non-rigid garment bag without any issues.

A quick look at AA baggage rules shows they still have a non-rigid GB listed, but BA don't appear to anymore, so maybe there is a move among the carriers to drop these from the allowed list altogether.

cheers
