Generally, all aircraft take off AND land into the wind.

Depending on the airport, if there are parallel runways one will be deps and one arrs. Not so with SYD as 16L (the shorter runway) wont handle the heavy internationals due to length

If SYD is using 16 R for takeoff over the water, planes will sit on the taxiway until a plane lands, taxi onto the runway, and as soon as the landing jets moves off (the runway) they are cleared for takeoff. Less that 2 minutes later another arrival will land "straight up their a$$" as it were (although they are now on climb out). I've seen this repeated for over an hour at busy times. But one screw up and landing aircraft would be getting diverted and stacked all over the place.
