Yesterday I was travelling to ADL from MEL and everything was all set to go: door closed, airbridge withdrawn, crew buttoning everything down. But then a long delay before the captain comes on to tell us that we are taking on extra fuel so that the plane can go onto SYD after ADL because of industrial action - the delay should only be 10mins. Then after about 20mins he tells us that they need more fuel as the plane now needs to go on to PER after ADL. Then we wait another 20mins and the captain says that the TWU refused to push the plane back because they were preventing planes going to ADL because of the baggage handlers snap strike there.
All in all we spent over an hour on the plane before being unloaded and given vouchers. By the time I got back to the QP I noticed that three ADL flights gave no boarding times and from time to time an announcement was made that it would be 6:30 before we would hear anything. While I was grumbling to myself that they should have sent our plane off before faffing about with fuel loads, there was announcement that they secured 50 seats on the 6:30 Virgin flight to ADL, but we had to make it to the Ticket Sales counter.
Thankfully I made it before the rest and was able to fly Virgin. I'm not sure what happened to the rest, but the Qantas apron at ADL looked very quiet with only one domestic flight there (the SIN plane seemed to be being loaded at that time alright). The terminal inside, however, looked rather full at the QF end.
There were lots of comments about a new government and union action, but I think it might be gilding the lily a bit too much.
