Hi all. I am returning from USA flying on a single Qantas Booking QF3338 (AA) SFO > LAX and then QF94 MEL. Can anyone advise if my bags will be checked through all the way, or if I need to pick up bags and recheck in LAX? It's only a 2hr 20 min stop in LAX, so a bit concerned if bags are not checked-through then I wont have enough time. Also, if bags are checked through, at what point do you clear immigration? Many thanks

Your bags will be checked through. You’ll do immigration in MEL. Heaps of time in LAX.

The USA does not have any outbound immigration control, it’s done digitally when you board your plane, so QF94 will be like a domestic flight except you have to show your passport as you board.

Good to know, thanks

As above no immigration control
But make sure you don't follow the crowds and exit the LAX terminal (I believe Terminal 5 in your case) on to the street.
If you did, you have to then go through security at the TBIT which would eat up your time on the ground. If you ended up in this position, walk to TBIT and don't wait for the terminal shuttle bus because it only goes in one direction from T5-T6-T7-T8-T1-T2-T3-TBIT. It is much much quicker walking from T5 to T4 to TBIT

The best way to get T5 to T4 and TBIT without having to encounter security checks is to use the airside tunnel between Terminal 5 and Terminal 4 - the tunnel entrance is down the escalator is between Gate 53 and 55 at T5
From T4 to TBIT is an upper level walkway
