Qantas Business in A380 $650 taxes plus 120,000 points

Jetstar Business in Dreamliner $530 taxes plus 96,000 points

Purchase Jetstar Business in Dreamliner $1258 fares in total plus 0 points


The Jetstar fare is only $608 more than the Taxes for the QF freebie. It is not worth wasting 120,000 points to only save $608.

We can make better use than that for the points. I think I will buy the jetstar flights.

To make a like-for-like comparison (or as near to as possible) you need to compare the Jetstar fare with the points + surcharges required for an award in premium economy on the QF A380. Jetstar Business and QF A380 Business class are very different products, and many would argue that Jetstar Business is much closer to QF premium economy.

It would also help to know the route and airplane types as well.

I'd be more likely to take the Jetstar 'business' option on a shorter flight + day time flight. I'd be leaning towards going for the paid fare if the hard product on Jetstar is okay and you have better plans for the points (plus I'm assuming you will learn points on the Jetstar flight).

The QF 'fines' for booking an award ticket really hard :( and sometimes it is better to go with the paid option like you are considering.
 
Assuming daytime flight I would value the 120k more than the $608 so I'm with you there. Unless you can manufacture points very easily that is.

I'm going to back track from this, principle applies, but cannot find QF PE award availablity on the A380 on the route !!

Yeah I know they are completely different products.. However, I dont "really" need the bells and whistles of the J on QF for a 7 hr day time flight, so I think paid JQ business is best option since the taxes are so steep on the reward tix. No PE on that particular leg.

yeah the taxes are huge, it's a day time flight, happy with the JQ business product...wont get the points for the paid flight x 2 pax though as they will be discount tickets.

yep, its a middle of the day easy peasy flight... best to save those points for a overnight flight where bed is needed and the cost of paid ticket is MUCH higher. Would have been nice to take the QF, but doesnt stack up, and points are hard work and time consuiming to accumulate in any mass.

It is... but with champagne and at least on JQ you're top of the pecking order instead of third on the list!

I'd wholly recommend the OP locks in bulkhead seats... make a huge difference in terms of comfort.

Ah yeah thanks, good reminder, will select the bulkheads if they are still available on that flight. We have done the JQ business several times and all have been pretty good for the price paid. We have also been on the 380 in J on EK on the Singapore-Mel hop, and we maximised it by using an o/n flight..ha ha, I agree re the pecking order, don't want to be 3rd !... I haven't bothered with PE in our travels to date as it seems we've always been able to use points for something better, or purchase Air asia flat bed, JQ Business.... PE always seems quite pricy in comparison. No doubt well use it one day I guess.
 
Not to labour the point about QFs taxes too much, I was recently looking at one way PER-BRU in J next May on points. At the time I looked, they were $1250. I could have selected a Y seat on half a dozen other airlines for the same trip for around $1100+ all up.
