I'm flying into SYD late this evening, and due to the late hour I'm going to grab a ride with Uber or Didi to the hotel rather than taking the airport train into the city as I have an early start in the morning. Do we book Didi through the Alipay app in Australia same as we do in China? Or will I need to download a Didi app? (haven't used Didi in Australia before).

No there's a separate regular app on the app store. I'd sign up again there if nothing to get some vouchers that new usere seem to get.

Many thanks everyone! I presume that SYD to Pyrmont at about 11pm will be quicker by car than train? I think the last time I stepped out of SYD airport into the city was when the Japanese Tsunami happened - watched it all unfold on the TV in the hotel foyer.

Any preference for Uber or Didi when landing in SYD?

Yeah Pyrmont’s a fair way from a proper station, and the light rail is super slow (and probably not so frequent that time of night).

Uber is still far & away the dominant one here. I’ve tried two others, Didi is one of those I’ve tried, and honestly half the drivers seem to be members of one of those others as well as Uber … in my experience those others are cheaper, but you can wait a lot longer for a ride.

Just check both and compare the prices.

Which terminal are you landing at? Uber has preferred pickup spots now but if Didi is significantly cheaper (often is), you might just have to schlep a little further.

Well landing in Sydney last night and trying to get to the city turned into a right shambles. Apparently there were major outages across Sydney's rail network due to signal faults, so with no trains running from the airport to the city and no replacement buses that left EVERYONE flying into Sydney relying on taxi / uber / didi - which as you can imagine didn't work that well...
