Yeh.. I'm looking at getting my mate's Nikon D200 (he's upgraded to the D300).

Can be an expensive hobby though... and I thought golf was pricey

can't go wrong with the D200

pricey....too right! there are many, many must haves when owning a DSLR ;)

Time to bump this thread. I'm thinking of getting a Canon Powershot G10. Anyone have any experience with this? (Also the airport duty free looks to be about the worst place to buy it price wise)

Sorry, can't help on the camera, but airport duty free prices can be atrocious. Was looking at a new IPOD Nano the other night. A$180 duty free at the airport, and was available for A$179 at Myer on the weekend.

A few weeks ago I bought an iTouch 16gb which I bought from Apple Sydney for $419. Got 11th of that back at the TRS counter but SYD duty free were selling the same darn thing for $360. Could've saved myself $20 if I got it as SYD PLUS 360 x 3 QF ffp bonus (plus 360 x 1.5 amex mr points + 1,000 amex 5/5 bonus)

Got a Sony Cybershot DSC W300 for approx A$442.93, after taxes were refunded. :)

Gawd. What a time to live in. 13.6 megapixels. Most of the world's computing capacity must be devoted to handling happy holiday snaps and funny videos.

Buy a camera, blink, and it's obsolete, replaced by something with twice the power and a new software suite.

My requirements for a camera are that it have a decent optical zoom (10-12x), nice big LCD, be a Canon (so I don't have to learn new menu systems and software), and be small enough to slip into a pocket. If it needs a carry case or a lens cover, it's too big for flying. My Powershot SX110IS is ideal.

Having said that, I've got a Canon S5 IS for landside which gives lovely results without being a big bulky DSLR.

Well this is from a technological dinosaur. We have a sony cybershot 12mp.It is easy to use, virtually foolproof,anti-shake is fantastic so even someone like me who is starting to get the familial tremor can take handheld night shots which appear perfect.
Drawbacks-only 3X optical zoom and in the Amazon not good enough.Though with 12mp you can crop and enlarge to still have acceptable results.
Still cant get my photos accepted into AFF or FT-the simple instructions simply dont work for me.

We just bought the obsolete canon powershot A720 and an olympus 1030sw, the waterproof and drop proof camera. While I can't recommend either, as I haven't been using them after shopping around for a while, waiting for discounts and eventually buying from MYER, the airport duty free worked out at the same price after the TRS discount (which still hasn't arrived in my account). So if you're able to check the airside price of the camera, it might actually be good value.

Just bought a Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ8, TSR coming Tuesday...

1. It is a clearance model, but not floor stock,
2. 12X optical Zoom, 7 MP.
2a. Big lens means better low light picture...
3. Made in Japan
4. the price !!! $260, $300 with the current $40 Myer one discount...
original price $500. You have to make the invoice over $300, you should know....
(may be add a memory card ?)
5. at Myer....

Hmm, I may take a look at this as well. (and on the MyerOne front, I noticed a 500 points offer for updating your email address on th MyerOne site)

I'm a long time Canon person, but seems Panasonic get a good wrap.

My other camera is the Canon IXUS 70, I like it because it is so small and have the face reg. feature,

this Panasonic FZ8 will be better for the 12X optical zoom and night shoots....

these two cameras combined satisfied all my photographic needs ;)

Take a look The Luminous Landscape's review of the Canon G10, where Michael Reichmann actually says the quality of the output is indistinguishable from a medium format camera output for print size landscape shots. Just google the search string "luminous landscape canon g10 kidding" and you should get the link to the page. The name of the article is "You've got to be kidding". Sorry I cannot seem to post the direct link due to my low post count status on the forum. Another article by Reichmann also compares the G10 with Nikon's P6000, and the google search string for that is "luminous landscape canon g10". The reviews for this camera are very good!

Price wise, I reckon Camerahouse (Cameraaction . com . au) is pretty reasonable, based on their online price. After GST rebate, it should cost you only A$659! Amazing price considering I bought the G5 when it first came out for close to $1,000. Walking around Melbourne for DSLR lenses a month back, their prices seemed to be more favourable than Michaels or Teds, but I am not sure if this applies to prosumer cameras.

Another interesting Canon prosumer is the upcoming 10mp PS SX1IS (A$775 after GST rebate) with its 20X optical zoom, HD video recording and CMOS sensor. The PS SX10IS (A$572 after GST rebate) is already out, but this model has no HD video recording and uses CCD sensor.

I've been thinking along the two camera line to get most of the bases covered. A DSLR would be good but not always convenient!

I just use the 5 megapixel camera in my mobile phone a lot of the time.
And some of us just settle for the 2 megapixel cameras in our phones. I have some very good quality photos which I am too lazy to upload to my computer.

I just found a 5 megapixel photo of JohnK (& a few others) on my phone.

Scary really :!:

to really cover all situations we should add a third one worth about $80, it is for high risk situations like bushwalking, water sports, attending saturday morning school sports, bugs night parties etc etc....(disposable really)... ;)
