Digital Passenger Declaration

It was with the App. I will be travelling to the USA tommorow and will make sure that I have my DPD done well inadvance and give the website a shot to see if it makes it easier next week for my return. I still had to fill in the yellow arrivals card and insert passport into the machine on arrival.
Yep. All sorts of grief at DFW on Friday with passeners not having DPD's. I helped out three people in my immediate vicinity trying to set up accounts and load the details in. That was just the black lane, can't imagine how many others in the general check in red lane that got to the counter and had to turn around.

My partner and I arrived back in Melbourne yesterday. We were on SQ 227 from Singapore.

Our journey had originated in Rome. We'd flown Lufthansa to Frankfurt and on to Singapore.

Filling out the Digital Passenger Declaration within the prescribed time frame was a pain in the backside. My partner and I each have an Apple iPhone and we both found it difficult to fulfil the requirements of the declaration. Fortunately, the receptionist at our hotel in Rome was both computer savvy and most obliging. She assisted us completing the declaration using the hotel computer and scanner.

We each received an email confirmation that the declaration was in order.

I must add that my laptop failed just before we left Australia so I couldn't take that. And we experienced problems accessing email in Italy.

When we boarded SQ 227 at Singapore we were handed out the traditional Australian form. We completed it en route and handed it in as per previous travels.

At no stage, were either of us asked about our passenger declaration form.

Whilst waiting for our luggage, I chatted with one of the many border force personnel and he told me the declaration form had been introduced by Canberra. The declarations were not being inspected but there were random inspections (probably for other purposes?).

I am satisfied that the new requirements and the time frames imposed place a burden on Australians travelling overseas and I can imagine there will be some/much heartache along the way, especially among older travellers who may not be as tech savvy as younger people.

I left Tullamarine wondering if the bureaucrats that devised and implemented the new system did so from the comfort of "working from home" with little regard to the practicalities of meeting the requirements while on the move overseas.

The website makes it clear that the new system is mandatory and suggest anyone not complying may be denied re-entry to Australia. Our experience was quite different yesterday.

What have others on AFF experienced?

I returned from Germany last week. FRA to SYD flying EK. I didn't have issues completing my DPD on a Samsung S20. I was asked to show my DPD at check in, but that was it. Also filled out traditional declaration on the flight.
No one checked DPD in SYD.

Says you need to complete the form in English, but I am sure I have seen cards in other languages. On one flight we were handed out cards in Spanish (South American). It was the only one available.
The IPCs are printed in a range of languages, but your written answers must be in English. Mostly those questions are your name, address you will be staying at in Australia etc, which are generally not a problem as people can copy from their passport, travel itinerary etc.
