3 months into my year with QF I've requalified WP already, and I will easilly hit 3,600+ QF flown status credits this membership year (3,400 last year).

By taking up VA's Platinum offer, I won't reach WP1, but will comfortably maintain Platinum with both airlines.

So my dilemma is do I hold out for WP1 in hope of amazing benefits or takeup the VA status match now?

What are AFF's thoughts?

I'm in the same boat as you... did WP requal in 3 months and will probably make WP1 in time for my April changeover. I've decided at the moment to go for PG as a definate but at the same time will fly VA probably between MEL-SYD to see what they are like onboard. If i am happy then I will shoot for VA WP as well as I'll have plenty of time to do it with all the work trips on the cards.

Given we don't know what WP1 will actually even be yet (or I haven't seen anything definite, anyway), and considering the *massive* difference between WP and the next tier down, SG ..... we may find that WP1 could just be a set of different coloured bag tags or similar.

I'm not holding my breath.

You know my thoughts on this. QF haven't even bothered to release the details of what you need to qualify for WP1 (remember that the rules seemed to change over the first couple of days after the announcement, with an undefined amount of QF metal flights required, and the possibility that QF1 is effectively invitation only or limited capacity). They have also avoided the direct question on which period of time will be considered for SC earn towards WP1 once it goes live.

Oh, and they haven't even given a clue as to the benefits.

Can't you status match to VA Platinum and continue to fly Qantas in order to get WP1?

I'm a loyal kind of guy. If I get matched I'll return the love through unwavering dedication.

Think of the status match opportunity as a 1st date. A really nice setting for this date. Upmarket restaurant, red rose, crepe suzette tableside ...
But it's not a marriage until you've dated a few times, at least. And met the in-laws at their worst when you arrive unexpectedly.

Maybe save the unwavering dedication until you've done some time together.

(I do most of my shopping at Coles, occasionally at Woolies. Get points at both.

Probably lots of examples, but you get my rift?)

It would be a pity to miss out. Think of the Do's!

They have said - right from the start - that the full details will be released in the fourth quarter of the year (i.e. from October).

I suspect they are still working out all the details themselves - you can't expect them to announce things that still haven't been finalised!

Sorry if this doesn't fit your preferred timetable. Many people were critical of how many months it took Virgin to release the details of their rebranding and Velocity revamp as well.

You are one of the most strident critics of QF on this site - I can't fathom why you still fly with them! If you don't like them, take your business elsewhere.

+1

I'm sitting on the fence a little. I will be trying VA/DJ out though and have gone for the status match.

I would be doing the status match with Virgin Australia, with the opportunity to get a great start to your hotel and car program of choice.

I would be trying for WP + PG but I wouldn't give all my love to Qantas, especially on domestic, the 1st lounge in Sydney or Melbourne is hard to beat so I can't see you changing your overseas travel patterns too much.

Good one, I had to laugh at this post from you, dated only a few times before marriage, that is fast.

wow, so much anger. Did I run over your dog in a past life?

Please point out one thing in my post that is incorrect?

And what you call strident criticism I call speaking about the erosion of benefits rather than towing the company line and accepting that all "enhancements" are positive.

Thing is, I'm married. We have been together for 10 years since the messy divorce from Mrs Ansett. Our 'Golden' anniversary is coming up next year and she's promised a lifetime supply of priority access:idea::oops:

Not totally sure I'm ready to trade in the old girl for a newer younger model just yet. I feel there's a few miles left in her, but she is very very slow in her old age.

Similar scenario for me, but no Mrs Ansett. I have been "married" for 12 years, but it seems she is tiring of me at the moment and has a preference for young gold, rather than older platinum! My "golden" anniversary has been and gone and I wonder if she'll take my lifetime supply of priority access away.

Why not, I ask you!?

Bird. Hand. Bush.

Indeed!!!

Now I can tell you both I know just what you mean. I divorced my bank a decade or so ago, and put up with a failing one sided relationship for a decade before that. It was just too hard to change, & the bank figured they had done their bit - let me put my name on the Title - and so they could call all the shots from then on, with the expectation of a 25 year relationship! They had me by the balls .., well, I put up with it until I didn't. coughs!

Airlines on the other hand, certainly do participate more along the way than banks.
Had to laugh at the sheer anticipatory note of the lifetime of Priority access! And the other one who is tiring of you & taken the priority access away! Oh dear, can't stop laughing.

The emotions & comparisons are valid though. We tend to be trained to strong loyalty. Not a bad thing.

Back in the early 90's I bought annual membership in both Golden Wings & QP, because it worked well for me with flight times, & destinations. I wasn't married to either, and didn't expect to feel that I was. I don't think they did either. We wern't courting, it was just a good workable, affable courteous relationship. We worked well, had drinks & snacks, both sides did an expected amount of purchasing / supply. AND everyone did their best to do the right thing by it all.

The benefit to me was a huge amount of flexibility for missed flights, baggage, & mixing & matching carriers - a QF ticket could be honoured at AN & vice versa, easy as. As well as lounge access before & after, with a visitor or 2 at departure & arrival airports. Company, champagne & the little meat pies / pasties were my standard arriving home meal. This continued happily for 10 years, & until 10 years ago.

Now I mainly fly QF. They do look after me extremely well. I get more op-ups than anyone I know, & they have really helped when the chips have been really down. They do most of the things they publish, as well as extras, which I can only imagine may form part of what they do for their top tier. However, I don't have a problem with also flying & having status with another airline which will suit some other needs.

I don't think the company sees the relationship as a marriage. Having said that, my preference has been, and may well continue to be to fly QF. I'm not going to kick sand in their face, be inflammatory, or otherwise challenging. But I do have choice and will exercise that choice.

By taking up the DJ WP I get to check out what's over there. For a whole year, and at a comparable level. They have made it clear I don't even have to fly with them to go visit, can do the old fashilned meet'n greet for friends & rellies, plus the hotel / car benefits. Lets me take a bit of time to settle in to the idea & test the waters. How good is that! Maybe QF will set it's posture in the meantime as well.
This will let me tell QF as well as DJ what they are doing right / wrong, and see what works well / best for me moving forward.. Hopefully everyone wins. Why should I feel guilty about this? If I'm happy, I'll rave about both of them! Wouldn't it be great to be able to tell the world that you get really good service whichever premium airline you fly in Australia!?

What I need to keep an eye on is how I spend my $ & earn the points, so that I can make it all work the best. Maybe QF WP & DJ gold in a couple of years? Or other way?

-: So guys, it doesn't need to be that difficult right now, just do the Status Match before it expires. Check it out, see if it feels right for your style of travel. On the noble side of things, you will be helping both sides by being an informed & discerning traveller for them both.
(not game to use any emoticon - have already lost AFF 5 times writing this by using wink, smile, big smile, cool & blush)

... I may live to regret this post ...

Great stuff storyteller, you have summed up my thoughts exactly :)

Thank you. Checked out some of the recommended tasters' Choice Clean Skins from Tone Hancock's avatar as I composed all this! it's the old (new) dilemma: consumer loyalty / old fashioned values / bullying?? / choice / balls / fair decision / ....

It crosses into so much of what we do & are forced to be exposed to now with health, politics, alliegences, alliances, ... And then they change the position of the goal posts. (coughs)

Continuing the theme in this thread; I'd be willing to have an affair (from my partner - QF) and sneak a few in the bag to see what the new younger model is like (VA).........

I'd personally go for the QF WP + VA Plat option instead of being solely tied to 1 uber top tier member/alliance. More options can never hurt.

Unless QF P1 is something spectacular, 'meh. e.g.; For all that flying (to get to WP-P1), on short East Coast hops, how much more does a regular WP get over a bronze? Still 1000 point min in Y last time l checked and same J Lounge for J, OWE, WP, WP+PG + WP1 (can't be 100% on that last one, but CL Lounge looks unlikely in my eyes...)

Having said that, with VA Platinum 4 upgrades per year just announced, l'm *pretty sure* that QF WP1 will have upgrades somewhere in the mix, that's a given.

Brilliant stuff Storyteller; I would not be able to put it as succinctly as that - although maybe with a few more sips of T.H.'s TC's I might try¹.

The thing is, a couple of years ago while firmly married (or handcuffed) to QFF I began a fling with the Air NZ "Air Status"² Program. They seduced me with a great offer and after initially taking the plunge I have found they suit me as "the one on the side".

Now they have entered a polygamous relationship with Virgin Australia and I find that I have to consider which of the dual mistresses to pledge my loyalty to. Both freely interchange the benefits I am most interested in, but to garner the upper levels going forward I need to pledge my [defacto] troth to one or the other.

All this while QFF seemingly just looks on and does little.

¹ Actually went to the nearest Safeway this evening and puchased some TC's at 25% all up discount. Average bottle price was ~7.50 and I earned 480 QFF points. :p

² "Air Status" - as it's really a status program - you earn precious few "Airpoint Dollars or "Air Bucks". Although, very good for confirmed international flight upgrades.
