We have our trip to Europe with the ILs in just under 3 weeks. With the QF special, our TA says we can upgrade to J from Y+ (we= Mr Katie, Little Miss, & me) .but the ILs have such a cheap Y fare, it would cost $7k each to upgrade them from Y to J.
So - would you upgrade to J and leave your ILs in Y?
Upgrade & swap seats?
Not change the booking and hope all 5 of you get points upgrades? (ILs are NB, Little Miss is PS, Mr Katie is QP PS & I'm SG).

I think I would be upgrading, Im sure the InLaws will fully understand.:D Lets face the obvious dilemma, in reality nobody wants to sit next to the Inlaws for 20 odd hours, its a win win really, no matter who gets the upgrade, you will be fine, however, Id be sly about it, and keep it to yourself, and claim it was a comp at check in

Your already in Y+ now so are going to be a bit away from them..

Personally i would upgrade and enjoy the trip even more :)

How much will it cost to upgrade from Y+ to J?

How about upgrading the ILs from Y to Y+? Not possible due to capacity?

How well do you get on with the ILs?

FWIW I can't help you with this much, except to say you've got a much better chance of winning a straight up bet on a roulette table than all 5 of you clearing points upgrades.

I think the only conscionable thing to do would be upgrade the seats to J, then change seats (with your hubby seated between his parents) so he can spend quality time with his parents. :p

Benefits would be that you'll gain significant brownie points with the in-laws and you won't need to talk to either them or your husband for the entire flight(s).

:?:

It will cost us about $3500; $765 or so per adult, and $2k for Little Miss.

I asked the TA last night, and don't have an answer yet.

How well do you get on with the ILs?.
Fairly well, though we don't expect to sit next to them for the flight (esp. as we are flying via SYD to ensure Y+ seats all the way, and they are flying in Y and directly BNE-SIN-BNE.
Although we probably all feel a tad over one another, after we lived with them for 7 weeks after the floods this year. :p

I would be upgrading in the blink of an eye to get away from my ILs...

I'd be upgrading! :) I'm sure the IL's would be pleased for you. you can still try to upgrade them with points.

Definitely pay for the upgrade. There is no way you will get points upgrades for 5 people, in fact points upgrades will probably be rarer due to all the I Class tickets being sold in the sale. I'm sure the inlaws would understand
Not sure how early you want to expose Miss Katie to the joys of a skybed, she'll have tantrums the next long haul in whY

She got the joys of a (Mk I) Skybed last year on our trip to the US BNE-LAX-BNE. At that time, QF15/16 were selling rows 24 & 25 as Y+ service in J seats.
Our first flight after that was to Sydney in January this year; she couldn't believe her seat wouldn't recline that far and that she didn't need to wear her PJs on the flight! :p

If you're not sitting with them anyway, I don't really see the issue?
Mr Katie feels bad flying in J when his parents are in Y. We can't really afford $14k to upgrade them as well.
He still feels bad, but not quite as bad, with us flying Y+ and them in Y.

Well......the IL's could sit in business with little miss and you and Mr Katie could sit in Y!!! :p

In all seriousness I know how Mr Katie feels. It is a little more of a conundrum than first appears.

Thanks to my AFF enablers, we have upgraded to J & the ILs to Y+.
Looks like I might hit WP on one of the last flights on this trip. Never expected that to happen!
Wonder if it'll make any difference for my flight to the US the day after we get back from Europe?? :)

Glad you sorted it out :)

I don't have ILs (as don't have other half!) but if it were me, based on past experience or from what I have seen - I would have left my partner and his parents in Y/Y+ and gone to J alone... sans little miss... now that is how to fly ...

CHAMPAGNE... for everyone.... in J that is ;)

Yes!! Hello F Lounge for you before that flight  Salt and pepper squid with a glass of Bollinger

Little Miss would find me in J and insist on sitting on my lap if I tried that! ;)

And Y+ gets real champagne; it's non-vintage, generally Piper Heidsieck (so far, in my few Y+ flights), but it *is* champagne, not sparkling white. :p

I'm not sure if they're doing hot food in the BNE Intl F lounge ... :( (or if the F lounge is all that better than the J lounge!).
It's tempting to change my routing to be through SYD, but I'm not sure if I'm up to it after all the flying that week. Hmm ...

Never been in the BNE F area, but if I were you I'd be routing through either SYD or MEL for every Int'l trip from now on .
Early congrats BTW ;)

Sod the inlaws I say, let them sit up the back with all the riff-raff. What have they done for you lately. ;)

Since when does BNE Int have an F lounge?
