Disappointing JQ Service

I don't care if I have to pay for food or a drink with JQ when compared with a full service airline, pay extra for luggage, etc, as long as I can book a ticket where I know I will get a guaranteed connection, and I know my bags will get there. Qantas in removing their metal and putting JQ metal on routes such as DRW-SIN have in their business model that we can still do exactly that. However, in trying to book a Christmas Holiday connecting in Singapore with Qantas OW partner Finnair, this has not been possible. JQ have not loaded codeshare onto the GDS, even though the flights are scheduled and available for purchase (as Point to Point). If I lived in any other Australian Capital or Cairns, this would not be a problem as there are full One World carriers flying from these ports. Hopefully Silkair's entry on the route might force Qantas Group to change their tack and force their partner to at least provide a higher standard of One World connectivity.

JQ are a budget airline whose entire MO when setup was to undermine VA and ensure that customers were deliberately left with a bad taste in their mouth from flying a budget airline.

JQ prided themselves on bad customer service because it muddied VA (as a fellow budget airline) as much as it did JQ.

The result - people who cared about service would now be prepared to stump up and pay a premium for QF.

Unfortunately, JQ (with unlimited financial resources) was successful. So it now exists as a QF replacement rather than just a VA destroyer.

The criticism JQ receives is completely warranted.

(FWIW I am on the record praising JQ when they do get it right).

That's quite a theory dfcatch! (Genuine question) do you have anything to back it up?

Well:

1/ I assumed everyone held the same view... I didn't think it was a secret, I've just always taken it as the obvious prevailing view. Really.... I just assumed it was the bleeding obvious.

2/ It is IMHO, the only plausible explanation for JQ.... Especially its behavior in the early days.

We tavelled outbound on VA and home again to Syd on JQ. Carry on baggage for both flights. Both flights excellent. Outward, I queried at check in the size of one students bag. VA said close to limit but no problem. We boarded without issue.

Made the same query tonight at JQ check in and was told same thing. However at the gate, the agent said bag was beyond the acceptable dimensions and would subseqently need to be placed in the hold. As such, the bag failed to make the flight back to Syd.

It's the flight attendants who make the final decision about whether a bag is suitable to be carried on the aircraft as hand luggage so even if ground staff did say that in their opinion the bag was okay if the F/A says no then that's it.

On all JQ domestic flights I've been on there is always a preboarding call saying to pax 5-10 mins before general boarding commences saying "this announcement concerns your hand luggage....oversize items may not be carried on this flight.....please come forward now etc etc". This would be the time to discuss this with the F/A's as there may still have been time to have the carryon loaded in the hold before general boarding commences.

Note that the JQ A320 aircraft are containerised so they can't just throw any last minute items into the hold as all the luggage is stored in containers which is loaded onto the aircraft via a pallet loader.

I turned to the two VA agents listening at the counter next door and held up my bag. I pointed to the gold velocity tag alongside the gold QFF and said 'hey virgin, thanks for my status match. This is another reason why me and many others have been giving you a shot'!

I would think the DJ agents would be a tad confused by that comment as flying JQ isn't exactly giving DJ a shot.
