What has happened to the discount business (I class) fare from MEL or SYD to AKL?

I paid $525 for a one way business ticket from MEL to AKL during Dec.

Absolute bargain! But it seems to have gone back to $1035 one way for the whole of next year????

Any ideas when they discount?

thanks

QF very rarely discounts business class trans-tasman. Sometimes they will for January - slow business travel. Otherwise it is only when NZ has a sale on (and often they decide not to match).

NZ discounts more often, although again mainly for January travel. They had a sale not too long ago so I wouldn't expect any more for a long time.

I am sure you are aware that fares are lower ex-NZ than ex-Oz.

It was a limited time promotion.

I believe the sale only ran from November 14th till November 30, but not sure of what dates were available.

As Kiwi Flyer notes, fares ex NZ are cheaper. If you can plan your trips properly, buy a one way ticket over, then buy return tickets ex NZ. Work out much cheaper.

If you can't plan that far ahead, then just buy the one way from Australian and then go to the NZ site and buy the one way return. Note that there will be a small currency conversion fee as the charge will come from Qantas NZ.

LAN have return fares ex-SYD for $963 including taxes in business. They have dates available for next week - just look for D category. You'd have to add on to and from MEL though. Oh, and LAN have a nasty 5.45am departure time from AKL. Kind of takes the gloss off....

I managed to bag three flights on these prices. Two in December and one in January. There was also business class specials in October and early November, I think Kiwi Flyer may have mentioned this as a precursor to the Code-share agreement and both sides trying to get marketshare which profits were to be based on. Anyway I continue to monitor the prices and will snap up the bargains whenever possible.

What would this earn in SCs and Points with your QFF #

80SCs and 1345 +25% J bonus miles = 1682 miles each way

Dave

Yup. The only difference to earning from QF business is the loss of status bonus.

Where is the best place to post/read Cheap Fares like this on this forum? I wished I was made aware of this before the deal had run out.

Most of the other deals I see posted on this forum our discount fares and very rarely J fares. So If anyone does come acoss them again, I for one would very much appreciate the heads up.

I haven't been posting deals ex-NZ since there wasn't any interest expressed previously.

I'm willing to fly the flag in support of deals to NZ if you are Kiwi Flyer:D

I have the first one on the way in Feb so would like to visit the family more frequently, travelling in J will make it so much more comfortable for Ms bammac and I!!!

And don't worry, we will keep the noise to minimum, or at least give it an honest try anyway!

ex-NZ means from NZ

Since most of the time Oz->NZ is more expensive than NZ->Oz I am less interested in Oz->NZ.

Well obviously I and others could benefit from the lower prices/deals on the return flight.

Discount Business ex-NZ count me in!

I am always interested in the discount business class specials either from NZ or OZ so please post when you see them.
I will do the same.

What about economy sales? They are far more frequent.
Yes they are more frequent but the base red e-deal airfares Trans-Tasman are quite cheap and the discounts that I see are generally only $20-40 off. The exception was in October for flights from Australian were 50% off, cheapest I had seen for over two years, I managed to tell my family and friends about that as it was perfect for them to come to my wedding in Martinborough.
Since then I have learnt to look at both Australia and NZ sites to see the difference, and yes NZ site is genrally cheaper, even more than AA.com.

Congratulations on the Wedding Altair, I hope it is a wonderful day.

I hoping to ramp up a few J flights to NZ to finally get out of the "Bronze Age", so I hope we can come across some more deals.

Anyway all the best!

Thanks bamamac,
JohnK has pointed me out to LAN flights SYD to AKL that are a decent price in J.
NZ does offer to WLG, CHC and AKL Business Saver fares on the A320, maybe 767, I have not seen any on 777 or 747 more regularly than QF. I have seen QF offer discount J fares three times this year and taken advantage of them.
